The Indian Navy has introduced a new design for Admirals' Epaulettes, as disclosed after an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Navy Day 2023 celebrations in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. According to the Indian Navy, this updated design signifies a notable departure from the previous iteration, reflecting a significant shift in the Navy's perspective.

The recently unveiled design takes inspiration from the Naval Ensign, incorporating elements influenced by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Rajmudra. The Rajmudra, also known as the Royal Seal, served as an authentic stamp utilized by Shivaji Maharaj in his official correspondences and decrees. Historical records indicate that Shivaji Maharaj received the Rajmudra from his father, Shahajiraje Bhosale, elevating it to a symbol of considerable historical significance.

The Admirals' Epaulettes showcase distinctive elements, including the Golden Navy Button, the Octagon, the Sword, and the Telescope. The Golden Navy Button signifies the Navy's commitment to abandoning colonial ideologies, reinforcing a departure from historical influences.

Meanwhile, the Octagon represents a forward-looking vision, embracing all cardinal directions comprehensively. The Sword symbolizes the Navy's core purpose, emphasizing its forefront position in national power, dedicated to prevailing in conflicts, overcoming adversaries, and addressing challenges. Additionally, the telescope serves as a symbolic representation of the Navy's commitment to long-term vision, foresight, and vigilance in an ever-evolving global landscape.

According to the official statement, the design represents a genuine reflection of India's rich maritime heritage, paying homage to historical symbols that bear cultural significance. Prime Minister Modi, expressed satisfaction during the Navy Day celebrations in Sindhudurg, stated, "Inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the nation is progressing, shedding the mentality of dependence. I am pleased that the epaulettes worn by our Naval officers will now carry a glimpse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's heritage."

This initiative not only establishes a symbolic link between the Naval flag and the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but also strengthens the overarching narrative of India's maritime prowess.
