Lt Gen P R Shankar retired as Director General of Artillery holds two M Phil Degrees in Defence Studies. The Government of India has awarded him the Visisht Sewa Medal (2008) (CI ops in NE), Ati Visisht Sewa Medal (2014) and Param Visisht Sewa Medal (2017).
He held many important command, staff and instructional appointments in the Army. He has vast operational experience including Counter Insurgency operations in Punjab, J&K, North East and Conventional operations in all kinds of terrain in which the Indian Army is deployed in the past four decades (including Operation Vijay). His impetus led to the modernization of Artillery through indigenization.
He has deep knowledge and experience in successful defense planning and acquisition. Major 155mm Gun projects like the Dhanush, M777 ULH and K9 Vajra, Rocket and Missile projects like Pinaka, Brahmos and Grad BM21, surveillance projects like Swati WLR and ammunition projects came to fructification due to his relentless efforts.
He is currently an Independent Director on the Board of L&T Defence I/C and Professor at Aerospace Department of IIT, Madras. He writes extensively on military affairs with special focus on Pakistan, China, Military modernization and involved in establishing the Tamilnadu Defence Corridor.
