The Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the maintenance and management of the Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing Museum of Valour in Tawang.
The agreement was formalised on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The MoA was officially signed by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Kangki Darang and Brigadier V S Rajput of the 190 Mountain Brigade.
Under the agreement, the Indian Army will take full responsibility for the upkeep and management of the museum, ensuring its preservation and effective operation.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his gratitude to the Indian Army, particularly the 190 Mountain Brigade, for providing defence land for the establishment of the museum and agreeing to oversee its operations. He assured that the government would fully support the museum’s maintenance whenever required.
During the event, Chief Minister Khandu paid rich tributes to Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, under whose directives Major Khathing travelled to Tawang in 1951. This historic mission brought the Tawang region, previously under Tibetan administration, into India’s fold.
“This pivotal move not only integrated Tawang into India but also reflected Patel's vision of a unified and strong nation,” Khandu noted.
He also credited the efforts of Sardar Patel, Major Khathing, and Assam's then-Governor Daulat Ram in securing Tawang as an integral part of India. “If not for Sardar Patel, Major Bob Khathing, and Governor Daulat Ram, who knows we Monpas and the Tawang region today might have been under China-controlled Tibet!” Khandu remarked.
The event saw the presence of Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Minister P D Sona, legislators Oken Tayeng and Namge Tsering, Tourism Secretary, commanders of the 106 and 46 Brigades, Zilla Parishad Chairperson of Tawang, senior Army officials, and heads of departments.
The signing of this agreement underscores the collaborative efforts between the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army in preserving the legacy of Major Bob Khathing and celebrating his valour. It is expected to enhance the museum’s significance as a landmark of historical and cultural importance in the region.
