In the wake of rising tensions with Pakistan, the government will conduct civil defence mock drills in four border states and in Haryana on May 29. Drills will be held in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The announcement of these exercises came after India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The Haryana government will hold civil defence exercise named Operation Shield across all 22 districts of the state to test its emergency preparedness.
Officials scheduled the exercise between 5 pm and 9 pm. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs will guide the drill. Authorities will simulate critical situations like air raids, drone attacks, and other wartime scenarios in light of current national security concerns.
Earlier this month, officials conducted mock drills across the country under the name 'Operation Abhyaas'.
These drills simulated multiple hostile scenarios, including air raids, fire emergencies, and search-and-rescue operations. Several states and Union Territories (UTs) took part.
This exercise marked the first national-level civil defence preparedness activity since the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Authorities held the mock drills just hours after the Indian military launched Operation Sindoor.
The operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as a strong response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
On April 22, the terror group The Resistance Front carried out the attack and killed 26 civilians.
Officials conducted the civil defence drills in several states and UTs. These included Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur.
