The US administration issued a notice on Tuesday, warning foreign students that their visas could be revoked if they skipped classes, dropped out, or left their academic program without informing their school.
The US Embassy in India posted the update on X. The post said, “If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues.”
This notice came four days after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking the legal status of international students across the US while a related lawsuit proceeded.
On Thursday, US District Judge Jeffrey S. White in Oakland issued an injunction. He barred the government from arresting, detaining, or relocating students based solely on their visa status until the case reached a resolution, according to the Associated Press.
Students could still face detention for other reasons. Authorities could revoke their status if courts convicted them of violent crimes carrying prison sentences longer than one year.
According to the Associated Press, over 4,700 international students lost permission to study in the US this spring with little notice or explanation, as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that at least 295 more Indian nationals faced deportation from the US.
In a written response to a question by Lok Sabha MP Raja Ram Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the MEA had raised serious concerns. The ministry asked US authorities to respect the religious sensitivities and dietary preferences of the deportees.
Since Trump took office in January 2025, the US deported 388 Indians, mostly in February. The MEA stated that 153 of them were from Punjab.
In March, the MEA responded to an inquiry by MP Kathir Anand. It said, “From January 2025 till date, a total of 388 deportees arrived in India from the US. Of these, a total of 333 Indian nationals arrived in Amritsar from the US on three deportation flights that landed on 5th, 15th and 16th February 2025 respectively. Separately, 55 Indian deportees arrived in New Delhi from the US via Panama on commercial flights.”
