On Tuesday, PM Modi visited an event marking 20 years of the "Gujarat Urban Growth Story" and inaugurated "Urban Development Year 2025" in Gandhinagar, the state capital.
Modi had launched Urban Development Year 2005 in Gujarat when he was chief minister. He aimed to transform the urban areas of the state through planned infrastructure, better governance, and a higher quality of life for city residents.
To mark 20 years of that initiative, Modi launched Urban Development Year 2025, along with Gujarat’s new urban development roadmap and the State Clean Air Action Plan in Gandhinagar.
This trip marked Modi’s first visit to his home state after India conducted "Operation Sindoor," an anti-terror mission across the Line of Control in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and after the military actions that followed with Pakistan.
Prime Minister Modi began his two-day Gujarat tour with a roadshow in Vadodara.
Family members of Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had delivered daily briefings during Operation Sindoor, showered flower petals on Prime Minister Modi during the roadshow.
"We felt good meeting PM Modi. He has done a lot for women's empowerment. Sofia is my twin. When your sister (Sofiya) does something for the country, it inspires not only me but others as well. She is no longer just my sister but the country’s sister too," said Colonel Qureshi's sister, Shayna Sunsara.
PM Modi posted on X, "Thank you Vadodara! Extremely delighted to be in this great city. It was a splendid roadshow and that too in the morning! Gratitude to all those who showered their blessings."
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Indian Railways' Locomotive Manufacturing plant in Dahod.
The factory started producing 9000 HP electric locomotives for both domestic use and exports. These engines will help Indian Railways increase its freight transport capacity.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised PM Modi for establishing a modern locomotive factory in Dahod.
"In 2022, PM Modi decided that modern electric engines would be manufactured in Dahod, and the work began in 2023. Today, a modern factory is ready," said Vaishnaw.
PM Modi also launched development projects in Dahod. He laid the foundation stone and inaugurated projects worth around ₹24,000 crore in the region.
Modi recalled the day he took oath as Prime Minister. "Today is May 26. On the same date in 2014, I took the oath as the Prime Minister for the first time. First, the people of Gujarat blessed me, then crores of Indians blessed me," said PM Modi in Dahod.
He repeated, "Today is May 26. On this date in 2014, I took the oath as Prime Minister for the first time. First, the people of Gujarat blessed me, then crores of Indians blessed me."
He spoke about the earlier skepticism over the Dahod factory. "Dahod’s electric locomotive factory was inaugurated here a while ago. I had come here three years ago for the stone-laying ceremony. People said the foundation stone was laid only for elections; they said nothing would be built. Today, the first electric locomotive has been manufactured here, and we flagged it off a short while ago," said Modi.
PM Modi encouraged citizens to buy and use products made in India during festivals like Holi, Diwali, and Ganesh Puja. He spoke about Operation Sindoor.
"After what the terrorists did in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, could India stay silent? Could Modi stay silent? When someone wipes the Sindoor off our sisters’ and mothers’ foreheads, their removal becomes certain. Operation Sindoor is not just a military action; it reflects the emotions and values of the people of India," he said.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Bhuj on Monday and began his visit with a roadshow across the city.
Locals gathered along the streets, waved the tricolour, and cheered as the Prime Minister travelled through the centre of Kutch district.
Kutch, which shares land and maritime borders with Pakistan, holds strategic importance. Authorities heightened security across the district before the Prime Minister’s arrival.
PM Modi was scheduled to address a public rally in Bhuj later in the day. This visit formed part of a broader outreach to border regions. It aimed to spotlight national security, local infrastructure, and ongoing development efforts.
