Tata Electronics’ first semiconductor fabrication facility in India came up in Dholera, in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district. The Gujarat government facilitated the construction of 1,500 residential accommodations for expatriates and staff of the Tata Group and its vendors at this location.
This development took place within the Dholera Special Investment Region. The ₹91,000 crore Tata Electronics fabrication facility aimed to generate over 20,000 skilled employment opportunities, both direct and indirect.
Construction began on 1,000 more units, adding to the 500 apartments already built. Authorities expected the new units to be completed by February or March next year. These serviced accommodations included options for one, two, or three bedrooms.
Mona Khandhar, principal secretary at the Department of Science and Technology in Gujarat, stated that about 275 apartments were available at that time. Of these, the Tata Group, their suppliers, and other ecosystem companies had occupied around 250. Another 225 were nearing completion. She said these accommodations were in Dholera, near the upcoming fabrication unit, and had already been occupied by the teams stationed there.
At the ground-breaking event of the Tata facility in Dholera in March 2024, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the first chip production from Dholera would begin by December 2026.
In the initial phase, the government allocated 10 acres to the Tata Group. They planned to complete 530 apartments on this land by mid-2027.
Khandhar added that, since the Tata Group was serving as an anchor investor, the government consulted them when necessary to ensure coordination.
The Gujarat government also facilitated infrastructure development for Tata Group employees, suppliers, and expatriate staff. This development included a fire station, school, hospital, desalination plant, hotel, and other facilities, including a 'Global Tent City'.
The government intended to build an environment in Dholera that resembled the home countries of expatriates. The Global Tent City would feature food streets representing Taiwan, Korea, Japan, the United States, and various European countries. The plans also included a premium mall and additional accommodation facilities.
