The MiG-21, which has been a central part of the Indian Air Force for several decades, will now be replaced by the indigenous Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft to further strengthen the nation’s air defence.
"The squadrons flying the planes are already based out of Nal air base in Rajasthan. The LCA Mark 1A plane would be taking over the MiG-21s in the IAF," news agency ANI reported as quoted by Defence officials.
According to reports, the Indian Air Force now operates only 36 MiG-21 jets, a steep decline from the nearly 900 that once played a major role in India’s air defence, including around 660 that were built locally.
The Russian-made MiG-21 was first inducted into the Indian Air Force in 1963 and served with excellence for several decades.
In October 2023, MiG-21 jets from the No. 4 Squadron flew for the final time over Barmer in Rajasthan. This was a symbolic farewell as their duties to guard the border were handed over to the Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets, also of Russian origin.
The MiG-21 squadron has served the nation for close to sixty years and was a key part of India’s efforts during the wars with Pakistan.
It was the first supersonic fighter used by the Indian Air Force and was brought into service in 1963. The aircraft has taken part in every major conflict since then.
Despite its proud record and important legacy, the MiG-21 has faced growing criticism because of its ageing systems and rising number of accidents.
Once known as the "backbone" of the Indian Air Force, the jet later came to be known as the "flying coffin" after a long series of crashes.
One of the main reasons for its retirement is its poor safety track record.
News reports have stated that more than 400 MiG-21s have crashed since they were first introduced.
Many of these crashes were blamed on old systems, engine problems, and low serviceability.
Even after several upgrades and efforts to extend their life, the jets remained unsafe and prone to accidents.
