The Association of Indian American Minorities (AIAM), a new non-governmental organisation, was officially launched on Friday at the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Maryland.
The initiative aims to bring the Indian American diaspora in the US together and advance the welfare of its minority groups. During the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Global Peace Award for Minority Upliftment (in absentia). In recognition of his contributions to minority welfare and inclusive development, Washington Adventist University and AIAM jointly conferred the prize.
Sikh philanthropist Jasdip Singh has been named the Founder and Chairman of AIAM. He is supported by a seven-member Board of Directors representing various Indian minority communities. The board members include Baljinder Singh and Dr Sukhpal Dhanoa (Sikhs), Pawan Bezwada and Elisha Pulivarti (Christians), Dipak Thakker (Hindu), Juned Qazi (Muslim), and Nissim Reuben (Indian Jewish). AIAM Chairman Jasdip Singh spoke to the audience and emphasised the organisation's contribution to PM Modi's goal of a "Viksit Bharat" by 2047. "Under PM Modi's leadership, India has embraced an all-inclusive approach, ensuring equal opportunities for every citizen, irrespective of religion, caste, or sect," he stated.
Member of Parliament and Indian Minorities Federation convener Satnam Singh Sandhu emphasised how PM Modi has changed India. He praised the "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" strategy, saying it had eliminated the appeasement mentality and established a climate of equality and harmony within the community. Members of the Indian minority diaspora applauded PM Modi for promoting India's constitutional value of secularism and enhancing the country's global reputation. They also criticised efforts to create communal tensions, emphasising that minorities in India now stand united against false narratives that seek to harm the nation's unity and progress.
AIAM is expected to be essential in strengthening Indian American solidarity and enhancing their contributions to the US multicultural fabric.
