Amid the ongoing controversy over Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav allegedly possessing two voter ID cards, Election Commission officials said on Sunday that another case involving dual voter IDs had surfaced.
Officials said that the wife of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation MP Sudama Prasad was also found to have two Electoral Photo Identity Cards. Sudama Prasad was a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Arrah.
The CPI(ML) Liberation Party was also one of the petitioners in the Supreme Court that challenged the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision process.
Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission asked Tejashwi Yadav to submit the voter ID card he had shown in public, which officials said was “not issued officially.”
Yadav, who was the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, had said on Saturday that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls released under the Special Intensive Revision process.
He had alleged that his original EPIC number had been changed and had shown an online search using that number at a press conference.
Following this, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Patna Sadar, who also served as the Electoral Registration Officer for Digha constituency, wrote to Yadav, saying that a preliminary inquiry showed the EPIC number he referred to had not been officially issued. He was asked to provide the card for further investigation.
District Magistrate Thiyagaraja S M clarified that the EPIC number currently recorded in the electoral roll matched the one listed in Yadav’s 2020 assembly election affidavit. He said that if there was another EPIC card, it needed to be investigated.
Meanwhile, NDA leaders, including BJP’s Ajay Alok, JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar, and LJP (Ram Vilas)’s Rajesh Bhatt, called for legal action against Yadav for allegedly having two voter ID cards. They also questioned whether Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a key figure in the INDIA bloc, supported what they described as “fraud.”
Their statements came after Gandhi recently claimed that Congress had an “atom bomb” of evidence showing that the Election Commission had manipulated votes in favour of the BJP. NDA leaders said the opposition was trying to discredit the Election Commission because it feared losing the upcoming elections.
