For the fifth day in a row, the Pakistan Army breached the ceasefire agreement on Tuesday along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting a firm but restrained reply from Indian forces. The Defence Ministry stated that the violations occurred during the night of April 28–29, with Pakistani troops opening unprovoked small arms fire in areas facing Kupwara and Baramulla districts in Kashmir, as well as the Akhnoor sector in Jammu district. “The Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner to the provocation,” a statement issued by the Defence Ministry.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have grown sharply after 26 people, 25 tourists and one local, were brutally killed on April 22 in Baisaran, Pahalgam. Reacting publicly for the first time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged that those behind the attack, including the terrorists and those supporting them, would be pursued without let-up. On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the Prime Minister for 40 minutes after being briefed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on the military’s readiness to respond to any situation.
Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently met with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in Srinagar to assess the security situation. At the time of the meeting, Sinha instructed the Army to take all necessary measures to find those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack. In response, security forces have stepped up their crackdown across the region, targeting militants by demolishing the homes of terrorists and their close associates. Last Friday, the places of Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh, linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and suspected of involvement in the Pahalgam killings, were torn down in Tral and Bijbehara areas of Jammu and Kashmir. In total, security forces have razed the homes of 10 active militants in the Kashmir Valley.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly came together to condemn the Pahalgam attack strongly and unanimously passed a resolution against the violence.
