NDA sweeps Bihar election, key bypoll wins redraw political landscape across states
Bihar’s 2025 Assembly election results witnessed a landslide victory for NDA with the lead party, Bharatiya Janata Party, securing 90 seats in the 243-member House. The Janata Dal United has followed closely with 85 seats, making it the second-largest party in the state. The Mahaghatbhandan’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has finished with 24 seats. The NDA, along with its alliance partners, registered a spectacular win. It secured a super majority, crossing over 200 seats out of 243 seats. Throughout the counting, the BJP and JD(U) stayed ahead in most regions. The BJP has won 90 seats, while the JD(U) has won 85 seats. Their steady numbers show that both parties have held strong ground across Bihar. Other parties have had a varied performance. The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Ram Vilas has reached 19 seats, while the Congress has a total of 6 seats. AIMIM has secured 5 seats, while the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) Secular has also secured 5 seats. Smaller parties have made limited but noticeable gains. The Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RSHTLKM) has 4 seats. CPI (ML-Liberation) has won 2 seats. CPI Marxist, Indian Inclusive Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have 1 seat each. For the opposition, Mahaghatbhandan, the election proved to be disastrous. It crumbled under the face of the NDA tsunami, with parties losing in even their traditional bastions. The Congress struggled terribly, losing more than three-fourths of its seats and emerged as the weakest link of the alliance. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, touted in some quarters as a kingmaker, failed to open an account. The majority of the Exit polls had indicated an NDA edge, but the extent of the sweep, with both BJP and JD(U) clocking massive gains, exceeded most projections. BJP clearly outperformed itself with a 90% strike rate has stunned even the political pundits. The data was sourced from the official website of the Election Commission of India at 07:05PM. The Election Commission of India announced the results of bypolls held across eight assembly constituencies in six states and Jammu and Kashmir. The day saw clear wins for Congress, BJP, AAP, PDP, MNF and JMM, with several seats witnessing strong voter support for local candidates. In Telangana’s Jubilee Hills, Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav recorded a comfortable win by 24729 votes over BRS’s Maganti Sunitha Gopinath. As celebrations broke out, he thanked people for their unwavering support and said he owed his victory to the public and party leaders. In Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam, PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi won by 4478 votes, polling 21576 votes against National Conference candidate Aga Syed Mahmood Al Mosavi. The result brought an end to the National Conference’s long hold over the seat. Muntazir described the verdict as a message from the people who were unhappy with unfulfilled promises. The BJP secured a win in Jammu and Kashmir’s Nagrota seat through its candidate Devyani Rana. She thanked voters warmly and said their support meant a great deal to her. In Odisha’s Nuapada, BJP’s Jay Dholakia won by a large margin of 83748 votes. He secured 123869 votes, while his closest rival, Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi, received 40121 votes. In Rajasthan’s Anta, Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya won by 15612 votes over BJP’s Morpal Suman. The bypoll followed the disqualification of former BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena earlier this year. In Punjab’s Tarn Taran, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu won by 12091 votes. Arvind Kejriwal said the people of Punjab had once again shown confidence in the politics of work under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In Mizoram’s Dampa seat, Mizo National Front candidate Dr R Lalthangliana won by 562 votes. MNF president Zoramthanga praised the dedication of party workers and said the people had chosen to continue the work of their late MLA. In Jharkhand’s Ghatsila, JMM candidate Somesh Chandra Soren held a steady and clear lead throughout the day against BJP’s Babu Lal Soren, who had also contested unsuccessfully in 2024. Voter turnout was strong in several regions. Dampa recorded 82.34 per cent turnout, and Anta saw 80.32 per cent. Nagrota reported 75.08 per cent turnout, Ghatsila 74.63 per cent, and Nuapada 79.02 per cent. Turnout remained lower in Budgam at 50.05 per cent and in Jubilee Hills at 48.24 per cent. Most of these bypolls were held due to the deaths of sitting MLAs. Budgam went to polls after Omar Abdullah resigned from the seat and kept Ganderbal. Anta’s bypoll followed the conviction and imprisonment of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters of Nagrota and Nuapada for supporting BJP candidates and congratulated the new MLAs and party workers.- Nov 13, 2025
