Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shared details of his recent discussions with US President Donald Trump, focusing on a proposed peace plan to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The meeting took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, December 28.
Speaking after the meeting, Zelenskyy said that President Trump informed him about a 20-point peace proposal for Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, Trump had earlier discussed this proposal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukraine-Russia conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, is approaching four years and is set to complete four years on February 24.
Zelenskyy said that during his meeting with Trump, he strongly pushed for long-term security guarantees for Ukraine that would last for the next 50 years. He made it clear that Ukraine would only engage with Russia if President Trump and European leaders first reached an agreement on formal and written documents. He emphasised that security assurances are a key requirement for any peace process.
Trump, on his part, described his engagement with both leaders positively. He said he had a “terrific” meeting and also an “excellent” phone call with Putin that lasted for more than two hours. Speaking at a news conference after meeting Zelenskyy, Trump said, “President Putin was very generous in his way toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices.” He also repeatedly referred to Zelenskyy as “brave.”
Zelenskyy explained Ukraine’s position on the peace framework and said Kyiv wants National Security Advisors from Ukraine, the United States and Europe to meet in the coming days. He added that Ukraine hopes the security guarantees would be delivered at the exact moment when the peace plan is formally signed.
He further stated that the peace agreement should be signed by Ukraine, the United States, Russia and Europe, and added that a technical group might be needed to help with the implementation of the plan. Zelenskyy said Ukraine remains open to all formats of communication with Russia and suggested that the proposed peace plan should be put to a referendum in Ukraine.
To make such a referendum possible, Zelenskyy said a ceasefire of at least 60 days would be required. He added that the details of how the ceasefire would be monitored would be included within the security guarantees. Zelenskyy also mentioned that discussions would be held on creating a free economic zone in the Donbas region.
Trump also addressed questions about travelling to Ukraine. He said, “I have no problem doing it, don’t anticipate it, would like to get a deal done and NOT have to go,” according to RT News.
Emphasising that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the conflict to end, Trump said, “I saw a very interesting President Putin today, he wants to see it happen, He told me very strongly. I believe him.”
Zelenskyy had been invited to Trump’s private club as part of the US President’s broader efforts to explore a negotiated settlement between Ukraine and Russia, aimed at ending the fighting and bringing long-term stability to the region.
