On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested exchanging all prisoners of war with Russia as a step toward ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries, according to news agency AFP.
"Russia must release Ukrainians. Ukraine is ready to exchange all for all, and this is a fair way to start," Zelensky said, addressing a summit in Kyiv on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. In October 2024, Russia and Ukraine each freed 95 prisoners of war in a swap, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acting as the mediator, according to reports. Ukrainian parliament's human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, mentioned that this was the 58th prisoner exchange between the two countries since the war started in 2022.
Before that, in September, both countries released 103 prisoners from each side. Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy praised Ukraine's "three years of resistance" and "heroism." Zelenskyy stated that he was prepared to resign as Ukrainian president "immediately" in the event that his nation was admitted to NATO. This comes one day thereafter. "If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready," Zelenskyy stated during a press conference in Kyiv. I could trade it for NATO.
On the eve of the third anniversary of the war, Zelenskyy urged US President Donald Trump to offer "security guarantees" against Russian aggression. He mentioned that discussions were ongoing with the US President about exchanging key natural resources for security support. The relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy has been tense recently. Trump called Zelenskyy a dictator and suggested that Ukraine should hold new elections. In response, Zelenskyy accused Trump of believing Russian propaganda.
