European leaders, concerned about possible concessions to Russia, urged US President Donald Trump not to reach a unilateral Ukraine peace deal with President Vladimir Putin during their planned meeting in Alaska, CNN reported. Their appeal came at a time when tensions remained high over the ongoing war in Ukraine, and fears were growing that any agreement made without broad international consultation could undermine Ukraine’s position in the conflict.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a virtual summit that included Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several other European leaders. The meeting was called in response to worries that Putin might try to influence the US president into agreeing to terms that would benefit Russia and potentially weaken Ukraine’s sovereignty.
According to diplomatic sources, European leaders wanted to ensure that any peace framework would be coordinated with allies and not decided in isolation.
After the virtual summit, Zelensky and the German Chancellor addressed reporters in Berlin, Germany, following their joint discussions with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, as per CNN. The two leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining a united front against Russian aggression and reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Two European diplomats who were familiar with the details of the virtual meeting confirmed that Trump appeared to say that he would push for an unconditional ceasefire in his meeting with Putin. This statement raised concerns among some European officials, who feared that such a move could allow Russia to consolidate its current positions in Ukraine without making meaningful concessions in return.
