Zee Entertainment Enterprises has secured the media rights for several FIFA tournaments in India until 2034, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, FIFA World Cup 2030 and FIFA Women's World Cup 2027. The deal marks one of the company's biggest investments in sports broadcasting and strengthens its position in the growing sports media market.
Through its partnership with FIFA, Zee will broadcast and stream 39 international football events in India over the next eight years. The rights package includes major tournaments such as the FIFA Men's U-17 World Cup, FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup, FIFA U-20 Men's and Women's World Cups, FIFA Futsal World Cups and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The agreement also covers documentary content related to these tournaments.
The acquisition comes after an extended bidding process for the prestigious football rights. According to a Reuters report, FIFA had initially aimed to secure around $100 million for the India broadcast rights of the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups. However, it later reduced its expectations and sought at least $60 million for the package.
Zee announced that its football coverage will begin with the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to start on June 11, 2026. The matches will be shown across the company's newly launched sports channels, including Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD. Viewers will also be able to watch the tournament digitally on Zee5.
The company said the move is part of its larger strategy to expand its sports portfolio and increase both subscription and advertising revenue across television and digital platforms. Zee believes football offers a strong long-term opportunity in India as interest in international sporting events continues to rise among audiences.
"We are excited to bring one of the world's biggest sporting spectacles to Indian audiences. Football cuts across regions and demographics, and the investments in garnering the media rights and launching dedicated sports channels reflect our clear belief in its long-term potential," CEO Punit Goenka said.
FIFA officials also highlighted the importance of the Indian market in the sport's future growth plans. Romy Gai, FIFA's Chief Business Officer, said India remains a strategically important market because of its young population and increasing interest in football. He added that Zee's strong television and digital presence would help expand the reach of the sport across the country.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Zee's position in the competitive sports broadcasting sector. Media companies are increasingly competing for premium live sports rights as they help attract viewers, increase engagement and boost advertising revenues.
Several broadcasters were involved in discussions for the FIFA rights package. These included JioStar and Zee Entertainment Enterprises. However, Sony and FanCode chose not to participate in the bidding process.
Despite the significance of the FIFA World Cup, broadcasters face certain challenges in the Indian market. One of the biggest concerns is the timing of the matches. Most of the 104 matches in the 2026 tournament are expected to take place between midnight and 6 am Indian Standard Time. This schedule could make it difficult for broadcasters to attract advertisers and generate maximum viewership.
The issue of broadcasting rights had also reached the courts earlier this month. The Delhi High Court issued notices to the Centre and Prasar Bharati after a petition sought directions to ensure that Indian viewers could access the FIFA World Cup through public broadcasting platforms such as Doordarshan and DD Sports.
The petition argued that the FIFA World Cup had already been designated as a sporting event of national importance under the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007. As a result, it called for wider public access to the tournament through government-owned broadcasting networks.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be historic as it will be the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 teams. It will also be the largest World Cup ever held, with a total of 104 matches. The expanded format is expected to increase global participation and provide fans with more matches than any previous edition.
The previous FIFA World Cup was held in Qatar in 2022. The tournament was won by Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, after a memorable campaign that captured global attention. In India, the event was streamed on JioCinema and broadcast on Sports18.
With the latest agreement, Zee has secured a major place in India's sports broadcasting landscape. The company will now be responsible for bringing some of football's biggest global events to millions of Indian viewers across television and digital platforms over the coming years.
