After Pawan Kalyan's victory in Pithapuram, Mudragada Padmanabham, who had earlier vowed to change his name if this happened, faced social media mockery prompting him to follow through on his promise. Consequently, he applied for a name change and the government recently issued a gazette notification officially renaming him from Mudragada Padmanabham to Mudragada Padmanabha Reddy.
Back on April 30, Mudragada Padmanabham pledged to change his name from Padmanabham to Padmanabha Reddy if he failed to defeat Pawan Kalyan in Pithapuram. Following Pawan Kalyan's victory over YSRCP candidate Vanga Geetha by 70,279 votes, Mudragada Padmanabham honoured his commitment to change his name.
He clarified that his decision was entirely voluntary, stating, "Nobody forced me to change my name. I have changed it on my own volition." Addressing the social media backlash and abusive messages from Pawan Kalyan's supporters, Mudragada Padmanabham expressed disapproval, saying, "The youth who support you (Kalyan) are constantly sending abusive messages. In my opinion, this is not right. Instead of abusing, take one step further…eliminate us (all family members)."
Mudragada Padmanabha Reddy was born into a Telugu Kapu family in Kirlampudi Village, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. His father, Veera Raghava Rao, was elected as an independent MLA from Prattipadu twice, in 1962 and 1967. He was popularly known as Kirlampudi Munsiff. Padmanabha Reddy completed his schooling in Kirlampudi Village.
He began his political career as an MLA with the Janata Party in 1978. Subsequently, Mudragada Padmanabha Reddy joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) when it was founded by NT Rama Rao in 1982. He successfully contested and won the elections from the Prattipadu Assembly constituency in East Godavari District in both 1983 and 1985 as a TDP candidate.
On March 15, 2024, Mudragada Padmanabha Reddy made a significant move by joining the YSR Congress Party. This decision was marked by his presence alongside the party president and then Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, at the Tadepalli camp office.
