The Kerala government received early notice of possible landslides on July 23, according to claims made by Union Minister Amit Shah today in Parliament. Tuesday's terrible landslides in the Wayanad district resulted in over 150 deaths and 200 injuries. Rescue efforts are in progress to trace 180 missing people.
The Home Minister stated that nine NDRF teams were sent to Kerala by the Centre after heavy rainfall was anticipated for the southern state, and that the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government was warned by the Centre one week prior to the landslides that struck Wayanad.
Amit Shah claimed in Rajya Sabha that “Nine NDRF teams were sent in Kerala in advance. The Kerala government did not evacuate people in time,"
"India is among four countries that can provide warning on natural disasters at least seven days in advance," he continued.
Mr. Shah stated that if the Kerala government had been alerted when the NDRF personnel arrived, the number of deaths caused by landslides may have been reduced. "The Narendra Modi government is standing like a rock with the Kerala government and the people to deal with the Wayanad tragedy," added Shah.
Prior to his Tuesday night visit to Wayanad, Union Minister George Kurian stated that Prime Minister Modi is keeping a careful eye on the situation.
“The situation is being monitored by the central government at the highest level. The Honourable Prime Minister is monitoring the situation and has deputed me to visit the affected areas. Both control rooms of the Ministry of Home Affairs are monitoring the situation 24x7 and providing all possible assistance to the state," he said.
Rescue operations are also being carried out by the Army and the Air Force. There are now two columns of army soldiers and two IAF helicopters in the air. Rescue operations are also being assisted by the NDRF, SDRF, and a dog squad.
