The three-month survey of Waqf properties in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has identified 1,670 properties, with 548 located on government land.
The comprehensive survey, conducted across all four tehsils of Kanpur, recorded 914 properties under the Sunni Waqf Board and 34 under the Shia Waqf Board in the Sadar tehsil alone. In other regions, 189 properties were documented in Ghatampur, 388 in Bilhaur, and 144 in Narwal.
The properties listed under the Sunni Waqf include notable sites such as the Muslim Orphanage, Khairat Ali Mosque in Nawabganj, a property located in Neel Wali Gali, the Waqf Mosque at Parade, Khalwa Cemetery, the Tomb and Shrine on Parvati Bagla Road, Fazal Hussain’s Hata in Fazalganj, and Sheikh Abdul Rahim’s property in Anwarganj.
Among the Shia Waqf properties are Nawab Bahadur’s property in Gwaltoli, Hadi Begum and Sardar Begum’s properties in Colonelganj, and the property of Waqf Haji Mohammad Ali Khan in Suterganj, Gwaltoli.
Of the 1,670 properties, 548 were on government land, many used for religious purposes, such as mosques, graveyards, and mausoleums. The survey indicated that approximately 80% of the Waqf properties serve religious functions, including worship spaces, cemeteries, and shrines.
The Kanpur district administration has submitted a detailed report of the findings to the state government for review. The Joint Parliamentary Committee will evaluate the report and determine the next steps.
In 2021, a similar survey was initiated but had to be suspended due to strong opposition. This time, the survey resumed following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, emphasising removing illegal encroachments and recovering Waqf land. During the process, 548 government-owned properties covering an area of 89 hectares were identified.
Pawan Kumar, the Minority Welfare Officer, stated that the report has been compiled based on the survey findings and will be forwarded to the state government for further action.
