Opposition parties continued to demand a debate on the newly passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, causing raucous scenes in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the second consecutive day. The session on Tuesday was temporarily suspended due to the commotion.
Tensions rose between members of the ruling National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), leading to a heated argument over the recently passed Waqf Act and what it means for the future. The argument disrupted the Assembly's work, leading the Speaker to suspend the session until 1 pm. The PDP and the Awami Ittehad Party had put forward an adjournment motion to discuss the Act. But the Speaker turned down the request, which led to protests by several MLAs. Slogans were shouted inside the Assembly, and PDP MLA Waheed Para was later taken out of the House by security.
Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister and president of the PDP, voiced her displeasure on X and described the Speaker's actions as a violation of fundamental rights. "The Waqf issue transcends matters of faith. It is a direct assault on the rights, beliefs, and dignity of 240 million Muslims in India. As the only Muslim-majority region Jammu and Kashmir must rise to the occasion and defend the rights of its people," she wrote in a post on X.
"In light of this, PDP has submitted a fresh resolution addressing this crucial issue. The government must take it seriously to ensure that the voice of the people is heard. I urge the Chief Minister, the Legislative Assembly and the J&K government to show political resolve and stand firm against any encroachment on the rights of its people," she added.
At the same time, Sajad Lone, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference, also expressed his disappointment and called for a no-confidence motion to be brought against the Speaker. "We too want that there should be a resolution. J&K is the only Muslim-majority province in the entire country. Muslims of India deserve that strong message goes from here. But for that, the Speaker is not ready. The Speaker has been elected by the NC. If they are serious, they should bring a no-confidence motion against him, remove him and bring in a new Speaker who would allow this. Short of that, there is no other solution. This is the only solution," Lone per ANI.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, has been approved by Parliament after being passed in the Rajya Sabha last week, where it was debated for 12 hours. The Bill received 128 votes in favour and 95 against in the Upper House. Earlier, the Lok Sabha had passed it with a vote count of 288 in favour and 232 against. This Bill brings changes to the original Waqf Act of 1995. The new provisions aim to improve how waqf tribunals work by making the selection process more structured, setting fixed tenures, and ensuring better resolution of disputes.
