Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, led a special Friday prayer to honour the late Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah. During the prayer, Khamenei urged Muslims to strengthen their defences throughout Islamic countries and promised to take action against Israel as tensions in the region continue to rise.
The speech by the Iranian Supreme Leader was delivered a few days after Iran launched a missile assault on Israel in retaliation for the murder of Nasrallah. Iran fired close to 200 ballistic missiles in retaliation after Israel killed Nasrallah and other prominent Iranian figures. There was only one confirmed death, despite Israel reporting significant damage. Since he remembered the passing of Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, almost five years ago, Khamenei had not led Friday prayers before. In his address during prayer sessions at the Grand Mosque in Tehran, he asserted that Islamic governments ought to stand together as mandated by the Quran.
In his speech, the Supreme Leader of Iran stated,“Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah is no longer among us physically, but his path and his resonant voice are and will continue to be with us. He was the articulate voice and brave supporter of the oppressed.” According to Khamenei, Yemen, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq are all enemies of Iran.
“The enemy is working everywhere with a special method, but the operations room is the same and they take orders from there. If the enemy is relieved of one country, he will go to the next country,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA news agency. “The Palestinian nation has the right to stand against the enemy who has occupied its land and ruined its life. Defending the Palestinians is legitimate, and helping them is also legitimate,” said he while referring to Israel.
Releasing minimal details, he stated, “We (Iran) neither procrastinate nor hurry in fulfilling our duty (to respond). What is reasonable and correct according to the opinion of political and military decision-makers will be done in due time and will be done again in the future if necessary.” CNN said that thousands of people flocked to Tehran's Grand Mosque during the sermon, where a sizable poster of Nasrallah was on display. Worshippers chanted pro-Hezbollah slogans while waving Palestinian and Lebanese flags.
In order to protect his funeral from possible Israeli attack, Nasrallah was temporarily buried in a secret location, according to multiple news agencies’ reports on Friday. “Hassan Nasrallah was temporarily buried until circumstances allow for a public funeral,” a source close to the group told The Associated Press.
