In Amravati, Maharashtra, a mob hurled stones at police officers, injuring twenty-one of them. The mob wanted a case to be filed over a controversial seer's "objectionable" remarks against Prophet Muhammad. Yati Narsinghanand, a controversial seer from Ghaziabad, was later charged by the police for disparaging the prophet in his statements.
According to reports, the stone-throwing incident outside the Nagpuri Gate police station in Amravati city on Friday night resulted in damage to at least ten police vans. A case has been registered against 1,200 people, and 26 of them have been identified by the police, said an official.
Navin Chandra Reddy, the commissioner of Amravati police, told reporters, “A huge mob, including members of some organisations, came to the Nagpuri Gate police station around 8.15 pm to press for their demand of registration of a case against Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj of Ghaziabad.” The mob left after the police station's in-charge informed them that a formal complaint had already been filed regarding their demand and that an investigation was underway.
"But as some people circulated the video of the Hindu seer's remarks, a large group of persons returned to the Nagpurigate police station. But when the police officers were trying to persuade the crowd, the mob suddenly started throwing stones at the police personnel," Reddy added.
The crowd was dispersed by senior police officers. More police officers were dispatched to the scene, he said. "Some police personnel and officers got injured in the attack and the police are taking action against the mob," he remarked. According to section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the police have issued a prohibitory order that forbids gatherings of five or more people near Nagpuri Gate.
Ten police vans were damaged and twenty-one officers were injured in the stone-pelting incident, according to a senior police official. "A case has been registered against 1,200 persons, of whom 26 have been identified so far. They have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are on the lookout for those who indulged in rioting," he stated.
Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj was charged at Nagpuri Gate police station with making allegedly objectionable remarks under BNS sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 302 (intentionally uttering words to deliberately wound the religious sentiments of another person), 197 (actions that harm national integration), and others.
