A clash occurred between two communities on Sunday during the immersion of the Devi Durga idol in Rehua Mansoor village, located in the Hardi police station area of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. The violence started when members of the Muslim community objected to the DJ music being played in the procession. Sadly, a 22-year-old man named Ram Gopal Mishra, who was part of the idol immersion group, was shot and killed. Several others were injured in the stone pelting that followed.
Following the firing, Mishra was taken to the medical college hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday night in Rehua Mansoor village when the idol of Maa Durga was removed for immersion. Muslims gathered close to the mosque asked that the procession halt the DJ music as it passed in front of a mosque in the Maharajganj area on its way to Gauriya Ghat while chanting religious slogans.
This sparked a dispute between the two groups, and in the midst of the confusion, some individuals began throwing stones at the idols and the procession. More members of the Muslim community showed up after the Hindus asked the police to intervene and arrest the offenders. Amidst the chaos brought on by the stone-throwing, a miscreant started shooting. Reporters said that someone fired shots from Abdul Hamid's home nearby. The close-range shooting killed Ram Gopal Mishra, the son of Kailash Nath of Rehua Mansoor village. He was taken to the Bahraich Medical College where he passed away during the treatment.
Saroj Tiwari, another individual, was also admitted to the hospital following his injuries from stone-pelting. Infuriated by the young person's passing, his relatives and other immersion participants blocked the road by placing the body outside the medical school. Following the incident, immersions were discontinued in the city, and the idols were positioned at the intersection of the roads. Stone pelting has caused damage to the idols.
In the Maharaj Gaj Bazaar neighbourhood, participants in the immersion procession set fire to and vandalised cars and homes. Anger-fuelled demonstrators are said to have set fire to four homes and multiple two-wheelers. Hindu protestors claim that the Hardi police are responsible for the incident, saying the police could have calmed things down early on but they intentionally chose not to. They also allege that, instead of acting against the Muslims, the police used force on the Hindus who were protesting the attack.
Around two hours later, senior police officers arrived on the scene and stabilised the situation. Police officers have been stationed nearby to stop the situation from getting worse. Nonetheless, police officers declined to discuss the incident with the media. The police have asked the devotees to continue with the immersion of idols, but the Hindus have refused, demanding justice. Many devotees from the procession had already left due to the attack and the resulting chaos.
