Police in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district reported Monday that at least 11 people had been arrested following violence that broke out during a late-night motorbike rally to celebrate India's victory in the ICC Champions Trophy.
“A group of people took out a motorcycle rally in Dehgam town after India won the Champions Trophy final match against New Zealand on Sunday night,” said one of the officials. According to the first information report, the rally was passing by a mosque in a minority-dominated area around 10:30 pm when some bikers sped past, honking loudly. Around 15 people who were inside the mosque for the ongoing Ramzan festival objected to the noise. They started shouting abuses and tried to attack the bikers with sticks, but the bikers quickly fled.
Deputy Superintendent of Police P N Vanda stated, "Most bikers left after being attacked by persons objecting to the noise of the bike rally. Some five to six persons escaped after leaving their motorcycles behind. The accused persons damaged the two-wheelers that were left behind." He further said, "We have detained 11 persons for questioning, and further investigation is underway. An FIR was registered in the wee hours of Monday." According to Vanda, only the complainant was injured in the incident. They sustained a fracture after falling while trying to escape. No one else was hurt. The FIR names nine individuals, who have been charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for unlawful assembly, rioting, intentionally provoking a breach of peace, and causing damage to property.
Meanwhile, in a similar incident in Hyderabad, fans lost in the charm of India’s win flooded the streets, causing traffic problems and disorderly conduct. The biggest crowd gathered in Chaitanyapuri, Dilsukh Nagar, where hundreds of young fans, including hostel students, celebrated in large numbers. Many climbed onto vehicles, blocked roads, and burst crackers, leading to a major traffic jam near the Metro station. Despite repeated warnings from the police, the celebrations went on for hours, bringing traffic to a halt. When the crowd refused to disperse, Hyderabad police used a mild lathi charge to restore order. Officers first used microphones to ask fans to clear the roads, but some kept dancing on vehicles and blocking traffic. As a result, the police took strict action. Videos of the lathi charge went viral, showing fans running as officers stepped in.
