Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday won the trust vote in the Assembly after 144 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion. Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced that 22 MLAs voted against the motion, while five members remained neutral during the voting process.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had the support of 120 MLAs along with its allies. However, the final number in favour of the motion increased after a section of rebel AIADMK MLAs reportedly went against the party whip and backed the government. The strength of the House also reduced during voting after the DMK staged a walkout from the Assembly.
The trust vote received support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The IUML, which has two MLAs in the Assembly, also voted in favour of the Vijay-led government.
Expelled Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) MLA Kamaraj also extended support to the government during the Assembly proceedings. He said, "I supported the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government yesterday, I support it today, and I will continue to support it for the next five years. CM Vijay is protecting the entire state. I believe he will not leave me either. I am sure our Vijay will protect and save me too."
Amid the trust vote proceedings, DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin alleged that divisions had emerged within the AIADMK. He criticised the developments surrounding the trust vote and accused the ruling side of engineering political defections. He said, "The Chief Minister rushed to meet the rebel MLAs even before they had officially quit the party. This is not a change; it is an exchange. The government lost the public's trust on the very first day. That is precisely why we are staging a boycott; continue implementing the schemes of the DMK government—the people are waiting."
AIADMK MLA SP Velumani expressed support for the confidence motion during the Assembly session. A brief heated exchange was also witnessed between the two factions of the AIADMK during the proceedings.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami stated that his party would oppose the Vijay government in the trust vote. He also alleged that AIADMK MLAs were being offered money to support the motion. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Bhojrajan said it was unfortunate that allegations were being made against the BJP inside the Assembly without evidence. He added that the BJP would maintain a neutral stand in the present government arrangement.
DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakant claimed that reports of horse-trading had surfaced in Tamil Nadu politics for the first time. She said, "If 'Radhan Pandit' Vetrivel is your spiritual guide, appoint him in a private capacity; however, designating him as a political advisor is objectionable."
During the discussion on the confidence motion, Congress, CPI(M), and VCK leaders openly supported the TVK government while also raising their demands and suggestions in the Assembly. CPI leaders stated that they backed the motion to prevent alleged attempts to destabilise the government. The party said, "The BJP wanted to impose President's Rule through the back door; that is why we extended our support."
Congress Legislature Party leader Rajesh Kumar also announced support for the confidence motion. He said, "The BJP had hatched a conspiracy to form the government through the back door; that is precisely why the Congress, CPM, CPI, VCK, and IUML extended their support."
With the successful trust vote, Vijay has now formally established majority support in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The voting also exposed visible cracks within the AIADMK, as several rebel MLAs backed the ruling side despite the opposition party’s stand against the motion. The Assembly proceedings remained politically charged throughout the day, with accusations of horse-trading, political conspiracy, and internal divisions dominating the debate.
