France has become Vietnam's top-tier diplomatic partner and a "comprehensive strategic partnership," signifying a true sealing of their relationship. The development came during Vietnamese President To Lam’s visit to Paris. The move indicates Vietnam's increased importance in global supply chains and its excellent approach to flexible foreign policy known as “bamboo diplomacy”.
Following the upgrade, Lam and French President Emmanuel Macron held a joint statement on Monday where they discussed stepping up security and defence cooperation. It further stated that the leaders decided to expand their collaboration in novel fields like artificial intelligence, aircraft, and airport transportation infrastructure.
Vietnam's other seven top partners now include the US, China, India, South Korea, Japan, Russia, and Australia following a flurry of deals in recent years. According to official data, the total value of trade between Vietnam and France in the first eight months of this year was $3.4 billion, which represents a 6.9% increase over the same period in 2023.
