External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the 2023 attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco as a "very serious matter," stating that India expects responsibility for the event and the prosecution of those involved.
"The arson attack on our consulate in San Francisco is a very, very serious matter, and it is something for which we expect accountability. We would like to see that people who did it are held responsible," Jaishankar said at a press conference in Washington DC on Wednesday (local time). During the press conference, Jaishankar added that "he had a brief discussion on Bangladesh" with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, he did not provide the details.
"We had a brief discussion on Bangladesh...I don't think it's appropriate. I get into more details," he said. A group of perpetrators attacked the Consulate General of India in San Francisco on March 19, 2023, causing criminal trespass, damaging public property, and attacking Consulate officials. Earlier that same day, before the attack, some attackers tried to set fire to the Consulate building by spreading flammable substances early in the morning. A video later appeared on social media showing suspected pro-Khalistani protestors gathered outside the Indian consulate in San Francisco. They were shouting slogans and taunting the staff as they left the diplomatic mission.
In July, just three months later, a group of Khalistan extremists attempted to set the Indian consulate in San Francisco on fire. The San Francisco police, along with special diplomatic security, and state, and federal authorities, were alerted and began investigating the incident. The US strongly criticised the incident, calling it a "criminal offence."
