According to an assessment conducted by the UP State Export Promotion Bureau, Uttar Pradesh has experienced a remarkable growth in exports, surpassing 100% over the past six years.
Data compiled by the department reveals that in the fiscal year 2016-17, UP's exports amounted to Rs 84,000 crore. However, in the 2022-23 year, the state's exports soared to Rs 174,000 crores. With a view to further enhance its export potential, the department aims to surpass the Rs 200,000 crore mark in the current financial year.
The assessment also highlighted the top 10 destinations for UP's exported goods, with the United States, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, United Kingdom, Germany, Vietnam, the Netherlands, France, China, and Egypt being the key buyers. Together, these countries account for 60% of Uttar Pradesh's total exports.
The significant growth in exports reflects the state's expanding trade relations and its ability to cater to global market demands. It serves as a positive indicator for Uttar Pradesh's economy, positioning it as a competitive player in the international trade landscape.
Uttar Pradesh's export growth has been fueled by a wide range of products, including telecom instruments, buffalo meat, cotton-based RMG, leather footwear, aluminum products, silk, machinery, wheat, rice, sugar, iron and steel, and handicrafts. These diverse sectors have contributed significantly to the state's rising exports.
In response, Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi, the cabinet minister for industries, export promotion, NRI, and investment promotion, stated when reached for comment: The plan for the 2023-24 financial year includes widening the export basket and increasing the number of exporters in the state, capacity building on exports processes, unlocking the exports potential of ODOP and geographical indication, leveraging e-commerce for exports growth, hand holding expertise at ground level, facilities product development among other things.”
According to a recent assessment by the Federation of Indian Export Organizations, the growth of Uttar Pradesh's exports can be attributed to the state government's export promotion schemes. Under these schemes, registered exporters receive assistance such as 60% coverage of stall charges at foreign fairs, up to a maximum of Rs 2 lakh, 60% coverage of economy airfare up to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh, 60% coverage of publicity expenses up to a maximum of Rs 75,000 annually, and 75% coverage of certification costs, up to a maximum of Rs 2 lakh per annum.
