Over the past two months, the United States has reached out to multiple countries to address its domestic egg shortage, which has been triggered by a severe bird flu outbreak that wiped out millions of hens. As a result, egg prices in the US have skyrocketed, turning a common breakfast item into a luxury.
Recent reports indicate that the US has now contacted Lithuania for egg imports. According to the Danish magazine AgriWatch, American officials had previously approached Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. However, Finland declined the request, leading to widespread mockery of “Donald Trump’s brand of diplomacy” on social media. A report from the news website LRT suggests that Lithuania is the latest country the US has approached to explore the possibility of exporting eggs. Gytis Kauzonas, the head of the Lithuanian Poultry Association, revealed that the US embassy in Warsaw had shown interest in importing eggs and had met with the leaders of Lithuanian companies to discuss the possibility.
“We have provided the requested information, but we have not yet received a reply,” Kauzonas conveyed to Verslo Žinios, cited by LRT.
European social media users wasted no time mocking the United States after reports surfaced that Lithuania had been asked to export eggs due to a growing shortage in the US. Many viewed the situation as an ironic twist of fate, especially given past tensions between the US and Europe, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency, when he threatened tariffs and showed a dismissive stance toward European allies.
In a Reddit thread about the development, one user commented, “Literally going door to door begging.” Another user responded with a sarcastic remark, asking, “Did they ask politely, while wearing a suit?” referencing Trump’s controversial meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“If they had actual brains, instead of using AI slop strategies, they would buy egg-laying hens and import them, not eggs. This must be a joke to them while US citizens face dire financial situation under Trump economics,” one Reddit user gave an opinion. “Greatest country in the world doesn't have affordable eggs,” one delighted comment read.
