The United States has issued a strong advisory asking its citizens currently in Iran to leave the country immediately due to increasing unrest, rising security concerns, and major travel disruptions. The warning clearly states that American citizens should not depend on US government assistance for evacuation and should instead make their own independent plans to exit safely.
The advisory was issued by the Virtual US Embassy in Iran, which highlighted that the situation in the country has become increasingly uncertain. According to officials, security risks are rising and restrictions on communication are making it harder for people to stay connected and access reliable updates.
The advisory warned that disruptions in transport services and unpredictable travel conditions could seriously affect the safety of American nationals. It also noted that communication restrictions have created further concerns for people trying to stay informed or contact family members.
In the advisory, the embassy gave a direct message to citizens, saying, “Leave Iran now. Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on US government help.” The statement strongly emphasised that citizens must arrange their own exit due to the limited ability of the US government to provide support inside Iran.
The advisory comes at a time when nationwide protests in Iran have resulted in increased security measures. These measures include road closures, interruptions in public transportation, and ongoing internet blockages. The warning mentioned that internet disruptions have impacted mobile services, landlines, and national online networks, making communication unreliable across the country.
In addition, airlines have continued to cancel or limit flights in and out of Iran, creating more uncertainty for people trying to travel. The advisory said that these disruptions have made it difficult for travellers to leave through regular air routes.
Due to these limitations, the advisory suggested alternative travel options. It recommended that American citizens consider leaving Iran by land if it is safe. According to the warning, available land routes currently include crossings into Türkiye and Armenia.
For those who are unable to leave Iran immediately, the advisory instructed citizens to stay in a secure location. It advised them to remain inside their residence or move to another safe building if needed. It also recommended keeping essential supplies such as food, water, and medicines to prepare for continued disruptions.
The advisory further warned that internet blackouts could continue, and citizens should prepare alternative ways to communicate with family and friends. Officials noted that access to online communication platforms may remain blocked for long periods.
The US warning also highlighted serious risks for dual nationals, especially those holding both US and Iranian citizenship. It explained that Iran does not recognise dual nationality, meaning US-Iranian dual nationals must leave Iran using Iranian passports.
The advisory warned that even showing a US passport could lead to danger. It stated, “Showing a US passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone.” The advisory stressed that American ties could lead to questioning, arrest, or detention by Iranian authorities.
The warning also advised US citizens who do not have a valid US passport to apply for one after leaving Iran. They were instructed to obtain the passport at the nearest US embassy or consulate once they are outside the country.
The advisory also made it clear that the US government has very limited ability to help its citizens inside Iran. Since the United States does not have diplomatic or consular relations with Iran, consular services are not available in the country. The advisory explained that American interests in Iran are represented by the Swiss government through its embassy in Tehran.
Because of these limitations, officials said citizens should not expect routine consular support. The advisory described the situation as serious, especially as unrest continues and shows no clear signs of easing.
Along with advising immediate departure, the embassy also issued safety guidelines for Americans in Iran. Citizens were urged to avoid demonstrations and protests, as such gatherings could become dangerous. They were also advised to keep their phones charged and maintain contact with loved ones as much as possible. The advisory further suggested monitoring local media for updates and developments as conditions continue to change.
Meanwhile, diplomatic developments between Tehran and Washington remain in focus. According to officials, US-Iran nuclear talks are scheduled to begin at 10 am Oman time (11.30 pm IST). This will mark the first formal meeting in nearly nine months. The talks are being viewed as a sign that both sides may be exploring diplomatic solutions, even as security concerns inside Iran continue to grow.
Overall, the advisory reflects the seriousness of the situation in Iran. With travel disruptions, protests, communication restrictions, and limited US support, the United States has issued an unusually direct warning asking its citizens to leave immediately and plan their departure independently.
