According to a PTI report citing official sources, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had a phone call on Thursday. The conversation took place amid an extremely tense atmosphere following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Hegseth expressed his deepest sympathies for the tragic loss of lives in the Pahalgam attack, which triggered a diplomatic standoff between India and Pakistan. He also conveyed strong support from the US government for India’s fight against terrorism.
"Secretary Hegseth said that the U.S. stands in solidarity with India and supports India’s right to defend itself. He reiterated the strong support of the U.S. government in India's fight against terrorism," Rajnath Singh's office said in a social media post.
Rajnath Singh said during the call that "Pakistan has a history of supporting, training and funding terrorist organisations," the defence ministry added.
Singh also stressed the need for the global community “to explicitly and unequivocally condemn and call out such heinous acts of terrorism.”
This conversation between the top defence officials of India and the US happened one day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Rubio encouraged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia.
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, spoke to India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and encouraged India to work with Pakistan to reduce tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia.
Rubio also spoke separately with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He stressed the need to condemn the terror attack and urged Pakistani officials to cooperate in investigating “this unconscionable attack.”
After the Pahalgam attack, which was the deadliest in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack, India downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and took strong action. These included suspending the 1960 Indus Water Treaty and shutting down the Attari land-transit post immediately.
