The United States secretly attacked Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday as part of a series of limited military strikes carried out against Tehran in recent weeks, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The reported strike came hours after US President Donald Trump suggested that a deal with Iran was still possible, despite uncertainty over whether Washington would resume military operations against the country.
In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed oil prices had dropped by nearly $10 per barrel, calling it a record decline. He also said Tehran was keen to reach an agreement quickly.
“Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!” Trump wrote.
Citing US officials, The Wall Street Journal reported that Washington had deliberately kept the recent attacks limited and secret. The move was aimed at avoiding any indication that the US planned to restart its wider military campaign.
The reported strike followed several explosions on Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media outlet IRNA.
Trump also played down the possibility of further military action against Iran on Monday. When reporters asked whether he was considering fresh strikes after Tuesday’s US midterm elections, he replied, “No.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed it had captured a fourth US reconnaissance and decoy drone intact west of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to IRNA, the IRGC Navy said its electronic warfare unit detected and identified the MQM-170 drone during an operation on Monday. It then took control of the drone’s guidance and control systems and brought it down without destroying it.
The Iranian force claimed the drone was deployed to identify the country’s air defence systems along the Persian Gulf coast and over Qeshm Island.
The MQM-170 Outlaw, manufactured by US-based Griffon Aerospace, was originally developed to simulate aerial threats, test air defence systems and train military personnel.
The US last struck Qeshm Island on June 2, targeting what it described as an Iranian military ground control station used to direct drone operations.
At the time, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had intercepted three one-way attack drones targeting civilian vessels travelling through regional waters. They also intercepted several Iranian drones and ballistic missiles launched across the Middle East.
The US military later carried out what it described as a self-defence strike against the island’s drone control facility.
