United States Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has announced the removal of three Indian organisations from its entity list, which tends to increase bilateral energy cooperation. Simultaneously, they added 11 Chinese firms to the list, mentioning their national security and policies.
"The removal of Indian entities Indian Rare Earths, Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre (IGCAR), and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) will support US foreign policy objectives by reducing barriers to advanced energy cooperation, including joint research and development and science and technology cooperation, towards shared energy security needs and goals," stated BIS press release.
The Indian entities that have been withdrawn from the list are Indian Rare Earths, Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre (IGCAR) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India. This move underscores a "clear message" of the USA's adherence to strengthening its cooperation with India, especially in areas such as defence, technology and trade. This is consistent with broader initiatives to address growing regional challenges and build a more substantial Indo-Pacific architecture.
In contrast, the US expanded its Entity List to include 11 Chinese companies, citing their alleged involvement in activities undermining US national and global security and human rights.
The Biden administration has often stressed its situation regarding Chinese companies' participation in technology transfers and surveillance activities that pose a threat to global security. By imposing export rules on these entities, the United States underscores the growing strong stance in addressing possible security menaces from Beijing.
The revocation of these Indian entities is expected to reduce obstacles to improved energy cooperation, further strengthening bilateral relations. This shows a mutual commitment to peaceful nuclear cooperation and the progress of science and technology initiatives between both countries.
