The United States carried out airstrikes on military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island, which is known as the country’s most important oil export hub. The operation was confirmed by US President Donald Trump, who said American forces had successfully destroyed the military installations located on the island. However, the attack did not target the oil infrastructure, even though Kharg Island handles most of Iran’s crude exports and plays a vital role in the country’s economy.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump said that the strikes were carried out under his orders by the United States Central Command. He described the attack as a powerful bombing mission that eliminated all military objectives present on the island. According to him, the American military used advanced weapons and conducted the operation with high precision. At the same time, he clarified that the oil facilities on Kharg Island were deliberately not destroyed during the strike.
Trump explained that the United States chose not to damage the island’s oil infrastructure for now. He suggested that the decision was taken intentionally despite the US having the ability to do so. However, he warned that the situation could change if Iran or any other group interferes with the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He indicated that if shipping routes in the region are disrupted, the United States may reconsider its restraint and could take action against Iran’s oil infrastructure as well.
Kharg Island is extremely important to Iran as it handles a large share of the country’s oil exports. Located in the Persian Gulf, the island serves as the main terminal from where Iranian crude oil is shipped to international markets. Nearly 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports move through this island, making it one of the most sensitive economic assets for the country. Any disruption to operations there could significantly affect Iran’s oil revenues.
The island has remained largely untouched during earlier strikes carried out by the United States and its allies against Iranian military targets. Until now, most attacks in the ongoing conflict had focused on missile systems, military bases and other defence facilities across Iran. Kharg Island, despite its strategic importance, had not been directly targeted during those operations.
The latest airstrikes, limited to military facilities on the island, have drawn global attention to Kharg Island’s central role in the global oil supply chain. Experts say that any direct attack on the island’s oil export infrastructure could disrupt energy markets and affect oil prices worldwide.
The Strait of Hormuz, which lies close to the island, is one of the most important shipping routes for global energy supplies. A large portion of the world’s oil shipments pass through this narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets. Because Kharg Island is closely linked to this route, any military action in the area has the potential to create serious concerns for global energy security.
Trump’s warning about possible strikes on Iran’s oil facilities has further raised tensions in the region. He indicated that the United States is prepared to take stronger action if Iran attempts to block or interfere with maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the US has the military capability to strike important targets if the situation escalates further.
At the same time, the US strike highlights how the conflict between Iran and the United States has intensified in recent weeks. Military operations have continued across different parts of Iran, with American forces targeting key defence sites as part of a broader campaign against Tehran’s military capabilities.
The United States has so far avoided damaging Iran’s oil infrastructure. However, analysts believe that any attack on Kharg Island and its energy facilities could deal a serious blow to the country’s economy and could also lead to wider instability in global oil markets.
The warnings issued by the American leadership suggest that further action could be taken depending on how the situation in the region develops, particularly regarding shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
