Fresh US strikes on Iranian military targets have triggered a new wave of missile and drone attacks by Tehran against American interests across the Middle East. The latest escalation has also brought the Strait of Hormuz back into focus, with military and maritime activity increasing around the key waterway. The conflict has raised concerns over continued disruption to one of the world’s most important energy routes.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces carried out a fresh wave of strikes against Iranian targets on September 1. The US military said the strikes targeted facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These included air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities.

CENTCOM said the operation came after what it described as recent attempted attacks by the IRGC on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. It also cited attacks against American service members deployed in the region as another reason for the strikes.

The US strikes were followed by reports of explosions at several locations across southern and eastern Iran. Iranian media reported blasts in Asaluyeh, Jiroft, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Konarak, Chabahar, Jask, Sirik and Lavan. Further missile attacks were later reported near Ahvaz and Aghajari.

Iranian authorities also said a US missile strike hit an area near a residential home in Kuhestak, in Sirik county of Hormozgan province. A wedding celebration was reportedly taking place at the property when the strike occurred.

The Iranian Red Crescent said shrapnel from the strike hit the residential property, killing four people, including a child, and injuring more than 50 others. "Following a US missile attack, shrapnel hit a residential home in the city of Kuhestak, in Sirik county of Hormozgan province, where a wedding celebration was taking place," the Red Crescent said in a post on X. "More than 50 people were injured and four people, including a young child, were martyred,' it added.

Other Iranian officials later reported a higher number of injured people. Some Iranian state media outlets also said the death toll had increased to at least five.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first public message since the latest round of US-Iran hostilities began. He warned Washington that Iran and its allies would respond to the latest attacks.

"The dear nation of Iran and the resistance front have unforgettable lessons for the American enemy", Khamenei said, according to Iranian media.

IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebi also warned the United States against further military action. Washington, he said, "will regret its new attacks", adding that "severe punishment awaits the aggressors."

Iran then launched missile and drone attacks against US military interests in several countries across the region. The targets included American interests in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq.

The IRGC claimed that it carried out a "heavy" ballistic missile attack on Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan. It also said it targeted a US Marine facility in the country. Iran further claimed that it launched a coordinated missile and drone attack on US facilities in Erbil, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

The IRGC said the attack on Erbil destroyed military infrastructure and killed US personnel. These claims could not be independently verified.

Jordan said its air defence systems intercepted 10 ballistic missiles launched from Iran. Three other missiles landed in remote areas, according to Jordanian authorities. The country reported no confirmed casualties or direct hits on the US training facility.

Kuwait also said its air defences were responding to hostile drone attacks. Bahrain said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed incoming Iranian drones.

US President Donald Trump said the latest American strikes were carried out in response to Iran’s alleged attempt to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He also cited Iranian missile attacks against a US military base in Jordan as another reason for the strikes.

Trump warned Tehran against further retaliation. He said Iran would face a "much harder and higher" level of attack if it launched more attacks against US interests.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the latest confrontation. Iran has continued to put pressure on shipping through the waterway, while the United States has increased efforts to counter Iranian military activity in and around the strait. Any prolonged disruption in the area could have wider effects on global energy supplies and maritime trade.

The latest exchange marks another major escalation in the US-Iran conflict. Military activity has now spread across Iran and several neighbouring countries. With both sides issuing fresh threats and carrying out attacks, the situation remains highly volatile across the region.
