U.S. intelligence suggests that China is preparing to send new air defence systems to Iran in the coming weeks, according to a report by CNN released late Friday. The report, which cites three individuals familiar with recent intelligence assessments, indicates that Beijing is planning this move amid rising tensions in the region.
The intelligence findings also suggest that China may try to conceal the origin of these shipments. According to CNN, there are signs that Beijing is exploring routes through third countries to avoid direct identification. This could make it harder to trace the weapons back to China and may complicate international monitoring efforts.
The report states that the systems being considered for transfer include shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, commonly known as MANPADs. These portable weapons are designed to target aircraft and could significantly strengthen Iran’s air defence capabilities if delivered.
There has been no immediate response from key officials regarding the report. The U.S. State Department, the White House, China’s foreign ministry, and the Chinese embassy in Washington have not commented on the claims, according to Reuters.
This development comes at a sensitive time, as the United States and Iran are scheduled to hold high-level negotiations on Saturday in Islamabad, Pakistan. The talks aim to find a way to end a conflict that has lasted for six weeks. The possible transfer of weapons could influence the discussions and add to existing tensions between the countries.
The situation remains closely watched as global powers assess the potential impact of these developments on regional stability and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
