US Congresswoman Young Kim, representing California's 40th district, announced the definitive passage of the Uyghur Policy Act 2023 by the US House of Representatives.
In a social media post on platform 'X', the Congresswoman emphasized the importance of demonstrating opposition to the Uyghur genocide and the Chinese Communist Party's dissemination of disinformation, coercion, and abuse through both verbal affirmations and concrete actions.
In a press statement, US Representative Young Kim announced the overwhelming passage of the bipartisan Uyghur Policy Act of 2023 (H.R. 2766) by the US House of Representatives. The bill, led by Rep. Kim, aims to support Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities facing atrocities by the CCP by creating a strategy to raise awareness of their persecution and directing the State Department to respond effectively to human rights challenges in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
The bipartisan, bicameral bill aims to create a comprehensive strategy to raise global awareness of Uyghur persecution, prompt the State Department to address human rights challenges in Xinjiang and counter CCP efforts to silence Uyghur voices. Notably, Uyghurs and other minorities face detention, imprisonment, torture, and brainwashing in CCP-led concentration camps.
Rep. Young Kim, Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific, emphasized the need to oppose Uyghur genocide and CCP's disinformation and abuse. The Uyghur Policy Act provides tools for the US to support the human rights and identities of Uyghurs and other minorities facing the CCP's inhumane treatment in Xinjiang.
"I express gratitude to Rep. Bera for co-leading this bill with me, as well as to the 106 cosponsors for their support, and all who participated in this initiative to halt Uyghur genocide," she stated. "I remain committed to advocating for its implementation, staunchly opposing CCP's abuses, and championing human rights and freedom globally."
Ami Bera, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Indo-Pacific Subcommittee and co-lead on the Uyghur Policy Act with Kim, expressed joy at the broad bipartisan passage of the bill in the House.
Bera highlighted the bill's importance in safeguarding the Uyghur people's identity and promoting human rights in Xinjiang. She emphasized the need for Congress to remain vigilant in upholding human rights globally.
Omer Kanat, Executive Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project and a prominent human rights activist, expressed optimism regarding the significant impact of the House vote on Uyghurs.
Kanat highlighted the enduring suffering of the Uyghur people amid ongoing atrocities, now entering its seventh year. Acknowledging Rep. Kim's efforts and bipartisan support for the Uyghur Policy Act, Kanat emphasized that Uyghurs feel acknowledged and not forgotten. Kanat urged the Senate to promptly take action in response.
