In response to escalating tensions with China, the United States is reportedly formulating evacuation strategies for its citizens in Taiwan. Concerns have arisen that in the event of a conflict erupting on the island, a large number of Americans could become stranded. The preparations, which have been underway for at least six months, have intensified in recent months due to an increased level of tension, as stated by a senior US intelligence official cited in a report by Russia Today, referencing The Messenger.
According to a report from an undisclosed source, Russia's military actions in Ukraine have prompted the United States to reassess its arrangements in Taiwan, which could potentially become a focal point for a confrontation between the US and China.
In preparation for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US had been urging its citizens to leave the country using commercial means for several months. Additionally, the majority of embassy staff in Kyiv was ordered to evacuate two weeks prior to the invasion.
However, unlike Ukraine, the US State Department has not issued any travel warnings for Americans visiting Taiwan. Currently, Taiwan is designated with the lowest travel advisory level out of the four. The development of evacuation plans for Taiwan is reportedly being handled discreetly due to the sensitivity of the matter for the Taiwanese government.
According to sources cited by The Messenger, Taiwan is currently categorized as having the lowest travel advisory level by the US State Department, and there are no official warnings against Americans visiting the island.
The report also states that the creation of evacuation plans for Taiwan is being handled discreetly due to its sensitivity to the Taiwanese government, as mentioned by The Messenger's sources.
Although the State Department did not provide any explicit comments on the matter, a department official stated that maintaining secrecy regarding evacuation plans is a common practice to prevent unnecessary speculation.
Over 80,000 Americans reside in Taiwan, posing evacuation challenges due to limited routes and potential military fleet interference. The Biden administration's confrontational stance towards Beijing includes increased military activity in the region and regular US warship passage through the Taiwan Strait. President Biden's commitment to respond militarily to any forced reunification attempts by China has drawn condemnation from Beijing.
