On Wednesday, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson announced that he is close to finalising the Pakistan Democracy Act Bill. The proposed legislation would require a decision within 30 days on imposing sanctions against Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir.
Wilson shared images of the draft on X, stating that the bill affirms U.S. policy aimed at restoring democracy in Pakistan.
"Grateful to be nearly finished drafting the PAKISTAN DEMOCRACY ACT," he stated.
He further said, "It sets down that it is US policy to restore democracy in Pakistan. It mandates a 30-day determination of sanctions on Asim Munir. Reviews all generals, government officials, and their families for sanctions."
"To authorize the imposition of sanctions with respect to certain foreign persons who have knowingly engaged in the wrongful detention and imprisonment of political opponents in Pakistan, and for other purposes," the draft states.
Earlier this month, Joe Wilson announced that he was working on drafting a bill to impose a ban on individuals in power in Pakistan for what he described as the "wrongful" imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
As reported by Dawn, the Republican lawmaker urged Imran Khan’s release while speaking on the floor of the House. Wilson brought up the issue during a general debate.
"Pakistan has been a valued partner of the United States for 70 years, and our relationship is strongest when Pakistan embraces democratic principles and the rule of law," he informed the House of Representatives, according to the Dawn report.
He stated that Pakistan has weakened its democratic system by imprisoning former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Meanwhile, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to launch a protest movement after Ramadan and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to forming a broad opposition alliance.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, PTI leader Junaid Akbar Khan shared his views after being denied a scheduled meeting with the party’s founding chairman, Imran Khan, according to a report by The Express Tribune.
Junaid emphasised that PTI leaders would respond to their chairman’s call, regardless of government-imposed restrictions. He dismissed claims that party leaders avoided jail visits, insisting they remained committed to supporting their leader. He also reiterated PTI’s plan to form a grand opposition alliance and stage protests after Eid. According to The Express Tribune, PTI leaders told the media they did not rule out the possibility of staging a sit-in outside Adiala Jail if necessary.
PML-N President Nawaz Sharif stated that the people would no longer tolerate any attempts to obstruct national progress. He emphasised that Pakistan’s development would not be disrupted by “groups unfamiliar with the principles of politics and democracy.”
Meanwhile, Raza criticised the restrictions on PTI leaders, arguing that they were deliberately prevented from meeting their party’s founder, which he described as violating constitutional rights. He alleged that specific government figures were trying to mislead the public by portraying opposition leaders negatively. Condemning the “government’s tactics,” he accused the current administration of being illegitimate. He also rejected claims that PTI was responsible for indecent political conduct, insisting that the ruling party’s leaders first resorted to unethical political attacks.
