A commission of the US federal government has expressed its worry over the claimed decline in the religious freedom in India and suggested that the particular country be labelled as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). This is contained in the annual report published by the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and focuses on a section on India written by senior policy analyst Sema Hasan.
According to the report, misinformation and disinformation, including hate speech by government officials, have been used to incite violence against religious minorities and their places of worship. The USCIRF’s statement noted that it has called on the US Department of State to label India a CPC due to systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom. However, the State Department has so far not adopted this recommendation.
The USCIRF's document described how in 2024 some people were shot dead, beaten and lynched to death by some vigilante groups as well as religious leaders were arrested without due process. It also remarked the attacks on the homes of people as well as temples and churches were terribly severe abuses of religious liberties.
The report also mentioned that since the Manmohan Singh-led government, India has consistently denied USCIRF members visas to visit the country, citing concerns about interference in its internal affairs. India, along with several Indian-American groups, has previously criticised the USCIRF, accusing it of biased and agenda-driven reporting aimed at tarnishing the country’s image.
The commission also pointed out legislative changes in India, which includes citizenship amendment act, the constant force to bring uniform civil code, and state level anti-conversion and cow slaughter laws. The report claims that these alterations are meant to target marginalised religious minorities.
