US and Maldives hold discussions on climate, economic growth, and maritime security

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer in Washington, DC, to strengthen their countries' partnership and cooperation on climate issues, economic growth, and maritime security.
The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official statement that the discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations between the Maldives and the United States. Key areas of discussion included defence and security cooperation, efforts to promote and strengthen democracy, commitment to economic growth, and strategies to address climate change adaptation.
In a post on X, Blinken posted a photo of himself with Moosa Zameer before their meeting at the US Department of State, stating, "I met with Maldivian Foreign Minister @MoosaZameer to strengthen the partnership and cooperation between the US and Maldives on climate issues, economic growth, and maritime security."
Following the meeting, Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer took to the social media platform X to express his pleasure at meeting Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Zameer stated, "I am delighted to have met with the Honourable @SecBlinken, Secretary of State of the US, today." He emphasised the Maldives' commitment to strengthening its partnership with the US in addressing climate change, promoting democracy, and enhancing cooperation in maritime security.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new avenues to strengthen their partnership and acknowledged the importance of upholding a rules-based international order. They expressed dedication to regional stability, maritime security, and promoting peace.
Secretary of State Blinken congratulated the Maldives on the successful conduct of its Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He also praised the Maldives' leadership in international forums in combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
"During the meeting, Minister Zameer highlighted the significance of educational opportunities provided by the United States. He advocated for easier visa facilitation services for Maldivians to enhance people-to-people contact, facilitating cultural exchange, tourism, and business ties between the two countries," the official statement added.
The meeting was attended by key Maldivian officials, including Ambassador Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed to the United States, Secretary for Bilateral Affairs Dr Hala Hameed, Senior Undersecretary Hassan Hussain Shihab, Counsellor Zeena Didi, and Second Secretary Ibrahim Haail.
