More than 31,000 Waqf properties registered in Uttar Pradesh have been removed from the Centre’s Umeed portal after authorities found major discrepancies during a large verification exercise. Officials said the action was taken after scrutiny of property documents revealed irregularities in land records, ownership details, and technical information linked to the registrations.
According to officials, registrations of 31,328 Waqf properties uploaded on the Umeed portal have been cancelled so far. Out of these, Waqf claims related to 31,192 properties were also rejected after the verification process found inconsistencies in the submitted documents.
The move is part of an ongoing review of Waqf records across Uttar Pradesh. Officials said a total of 1,18,302 Waqf properties have been documented in the state and are currently under examination as part of the digitisation and verification exercise.
Authorities stated that the cancellations followed detailed cross-checking of land and revenue records. During the process, several irregularities came to light. In many cases, the Khasra or plot numbers mentioned in the submitted documents did not match the details available in records maintained by the Waqf Board. Officials also found differences in the land area mentioned in revenue documents, which raised concerns over the accuracy of the registrations made on the portal.
The Umeed portal, which stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development, was launched by the Centre to create a digital database of Waqf properties across the country. The platform is aimed at digitising and geotagging Waqf assets to improve transparency and streamline their management.
Under the rules, all Waqf properties must be uploaded to the portal within six months of its launch. The government has said the digitisation process is necessary to maintain proper records and prevent misuse of Waqf properties.
The issue has also become part of a wider legal and political debate surrounding the amended Waqf law and the mandatory registration process linked to the portal. Several stakeholders have raised concerns regarding technical problems and documentation-related difficulties faced during the uploading process.
Recently, the Supreme Court refused to extend the six-month deadline for uploading details of Waqf properties on the Umeed portal. The court observed that parties facing genuine technical or documentation-related issues could approach Waqf Tribunals for relief on a case-by-case basis.
Officials said the scrutiny process is still continuing in different districts of Uttar Pradesh. More Waqf properties are expected to come under verification in the coming months as authorities continue to review records uploaded on the portal.
Disputed claims and properties with unresolved documentation issues are likely to be referred to Waqf Tribunals for further adjudication. Authorities believe the verification drive will help establish accurate records of Waqf assets and reduce disputes related to ownership and land details in the future.
The Centre has maintained that the purpose of the exercise is to bring greater transparency and accountability to the management of Waqf properties across the country. Officials said the ongoing verification process is aimed at ensuring that only valid and properly documented properties remain registered on the portal.
