Unrelenting Attacks on Hindus by Islamists post-Brahmachari Chinmoy Krishna Das’s Arrest

Prelude
The radical Muslim population of Bangladesh has a long history of persecuting and committing atrocities against the minority Hindu, Buddhist and Christian population, dating back to the colonial period. It is impossible to find a 10 year period without at least one major anti-Hindu pogrom since the 1920s. Sabyasachi Ghosh Dastidar, the author of the book “Bengal's Hindu Holocaust: The Partition of India and its Aftermath” uses official Government records and over 25 years of extensive fieldwork to arrive at the following conclusions
- By conservative estimates, at least 30 lakh (3 million) native Hindus were murdered and over 4.9 crore (49 million) Hindu men, women and children simply disappeared between 1947 and 2001.
- The state has incentivised the persecution of Hindus through highly controversial policies like the Vested Property Act (which allows the Government and Islamists to confiscate the properties of Hindus who had either gone “missing” or were driven out of Bangladesh). The hapless Hindu community is left with the question “Aamago lokera jaay kothaay?” (Where are our people? Where do they go?).
- The authorities have remained in a complete state of denial that systematic persecution of Hindus has been a daily affair in Bangladesh since 1947.
Tathagata Roy, author and former Governor of Meghalaya and Tripura, agrees with the research of Sachi Ghosh Dastidar in his book “Ja Chilo Aamaar Desh” citing numerous examples of the state participating in and helping to cover up crimes and atrocities against the Hindu communities including mass-murders and large-scale rapes of women. The existing research proves that Islamists committing atrocities against Hindus have enjoyed interrupted state support from at least the 1940s.
Division-wise data on Communal Violence during the first two weeks
It would be incorrect to conclude that the persecution of Hindus had stopped under Sheikh Hasina. The Islamist lobby in Bangladesh acts as a pressure group and every single political party has accepted the majority of their demands. However, there has been a sharp increase in violence and other atrocities like public humiliation, forced conversion, arrest and torture under fabricated charges, dismissal from Government jobs and blacklisting from employment and business opportunities on the 1.3 crore minority Hindu population after the fall of the Awami League Government on August 5. The premier Bangladeshi media outlet “Prothom Alo” recorded 1068 instances of attacks against Hindu houses and businesses during the first month of the attacks [1]. A report from the “Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council” has documented 2010 instances of violence, arson, loot, kidnapping, murder rape, gang-rape and attacks on Hindu temples and crematoriums between 04/08/2024 and 20/08/2024.
The campaign against Chinmoy Prabhu and ISKCON by Islamists and the State
Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari (Chinmoy Prabhu) has emerged as the face of the Hindu movement for basic human rights and dignity of life. The Hindus of Bangladesh have submitted an eight-point charter with the following major demands:
- Establishment of a special tribunal for swift trials in cases of persecution of minorities, including compensation and rehabilitation for victims.
- Enactment of a Minority Protection Law
- Creation of a Ministry for Minority Affairs
- Laws to recover and protect Debottar (gifted to God) properties
- Five-day Public Holiday for Durga Puja
- Upgradation of the Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Welfare Trust to Foundation
Shree Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari, the General Secretary of ISKCON Bangladesh and Palash Kanti Dey, the head of a prominent Hindu organisation operating in Chattogram, say that the 8-point demands have nothing to do with politics or any political party. The campaign against ISKCON was started by Islamist groups like Hefazat-e-Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami and cadres of the banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir from mid-September, using fake news circulated across social media like Facebook. This campaign was designed to depict ISKCON as a “terrorist organisation”, working against the national interests of Bangladesh. A concerted effort was made to brand ISKCON as a cult having no connection with Hinduism.
Chinmoy Prabhu is the head of Pundarik Dhaam in the Hathazari region of Chattogram Division. He showed great organisational and leadership skills, succeeding in developing the dilapidated Pundarik Dhaam temple into a spiritual site capable of attracting devotees and tourists from foreign countries. He regularly supported issues related to the rights of minorities till the day of his arrest on November 24, 2024. He served as the spokesperson for Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha, campaigning for the rights of religious minorities. Around late-October, the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha formed a coalition with the Bangladesh Sommilito Sonkhaloghu Jot, forming the Bangladesh Sommilito Sanatan Jagaran Jot with Chinmoy Prabhu as the spokesperson.
Residents of Chattogram, leaders of local Hindu organisations and social workers like Sourabh Biswas (name changed) and Anurag Baishya (name changed) say that ISKCON is being targeted because-
- The Chattogram unit of ISKCON and Shri Chinmoy Prabhu were very effective in propagating Hindu Dharma.
- ISKCON and other Hindu Organisations have managed to reduce the rate of conversions by at least 500% since 2017. The online campaign launched by organisations like ISKCON for debunking the narratives of Maulanas and spreading awareness about Dharma among the Hindu youth are proving to be very effective.
- Being an organisation with access to international funds, the monks of ISKCON were able to travel to the remote locations of Bangladesh, helping poor families irrespective of religion. Islamist organisations use brainwashing, blackmail, threats, “womb-jihad” and job opportunities to convert the isolated and financially challenged Hindus living in these regions. The activities of ISKCON monks proved highly effective in resisting such conversions.
The rally at Lal Dighi on October 25 and the alleged sedition case on Chinmoy Prabhu
The Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha organised a massive rally at Lal Dighi on October 25, demanding that the interim government of Bangladesh accept their “8-point demands” [2]. The unelected interim government of Bangladesh and Islamists allege that some youths had raised a saffron flag on the Independence Monument at the New Market Intersection of Chattogram. They further alleged that this saffron flag was placed above the Bangladeshi National Flag, an act of sedition in their interpretation. Islamists and people with vested political interests included this sedition angle as an important part of their ongoing information warfare campaign against ISKCON.
Firoz Khan, a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), registered a case of sedition on Chinmoy Prabhu and 18 other Hindus, including Ajay Datta (coordinator of Hindu Jagaran Mancha) and Leela Raj Das (chief purohit) of the Chattogram ISKCON Temple ) on October 30 [3]. The BNP has expelled him for filing the case without party approval. Advocate and General Secretary of Bangladesh Sanatan Party, Sumon Kumar Roy says that a sedition case can only be filed with the approval of the ruling Government under the existing legal framework.
Photographs and videos of the alleged disrespect of the Bangladesh National Flag have gone viral on social media. A closer look at the flag being portrayed as the Bangladeshi national flag shows the presence of a crescent-shaped moon and a star, both of which are not a part of the Bangladeshi National Flag. Also, the saffron flag being waved above this “National Flag” is not a flag of ISKCON. The sedition case against Chinmoy Prabhu and 18 other Hindus appears to be completely baseless and filed with the intention of suppressing the demands of the minority communities of Bangladesh [4].
Several speeches of Chinmoy Prabhu are available in the public domain like the one in Rangpur on November 22. He merely demands equal rights for all the minority communities of Bangladesh and an end to their persecution [5]. Hindus travelling to join the protest rally were attacked by members of Islamic Chhatra Andolon in the Kaunia region of Rangpur District. The head of the Rangpur Division of Bangladesh Agniveer claims that at least 15 Hindus were severely injured during the attacks.
Videos of army personnel pulling out Hindus from buses to prevent them from reaching the Mahiganj College Ground (designated protest site) went viral on social media [6]. Local Human Rights Groups say that the administration had put a concerted effort to derail the protests, shifting the venue at the last moment and attempting to arrest Chinmoy Prabhu from the hotel [7].
The attacks on Hajari Goli by security personnel and their impact on the ongoing campaign against Hindus in the name of ISKCON
Security personnel had launched at least two attacks on the Hindu residents of Hajari Goli and anyone in their way on November 5, injuring at least 200 Hindus, most of whom had nothing to do with the spontaneous protest in front of Osman Ali’s shop. Osman Ali uploaded a Facebook post with derogatory comments about ISKCON and Hinduism. At least 300 Hindus were detained and many of them were -
- Pressurised to convert to Islam under torture.
- Tortured to issue false statements blaming devotees of ISKCON for the alleged “acid attack”.
- Ordered to pay ransoms ranging between 2-6 lakh Bangladeshi Taka (BDT).
- Pressurised to falsely declare themselves as R&AW agents. [8]
With the interim government of Bangladesh turning a blind eye towards the activities of Islamists and attempting to cover up and whitewash all the atrocities against the minority Hindus and Buddhists of Bangladesh, radical organisations like Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami began to organise protest rallies throughout Bangladesh, demanding that ISKCON be banned.
Slogans urging Muslims to catch and slaughter every single ISKCON devotee and destroy every ISKCON temple were repeatedly heard during the so-called “protest rally” at the Anderkilla Shahe Jame Mosque Square in Chattogram on November 8 [9] [10]. A campaign was designed to normalise hate and violence against Hindus by labelling them as “agents of ISKCON” and “anti-nationals”.
This campaign of hate and violence was launched against the entire Hindu population of Bangladesh. Hindus of all varnas and sects keep facing harassment and attacks daily and at least 15 Hindu temples having no affiliation with ISKCON were attacked between November 10- December 4. Islamists are using the baseless sedition case filed on ISKCON as a pretext to normalise attacks on Hindus.

The arrest of Chinmoy Prabhu and the assaults on peaceful Hindu protestors by Islamists and the State
Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested from the Dhaka Airport by members of the Detective Department on November 25, 2024. The minority Hindus came out on the streets with demands for his immediate and unconditional release. Massive protests had started in Shahbagh of Dhaka, Cheragi region of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Khulna, Kumilla, Dinajpur and Mymensingh within hours of his arrest. Social activist and human rights worker Anirban Roy (name changed) said, “It is extremely dangerous for a persecuted minority population to organise public protest. But we have no other alternative. We cannot tolerate the daily slurs, discrimination and frequent attacks on us anymore”
The first reports of attacks on the peaceful Hindu protestors came from Shahbagh Dhaka. Islamists armed with sticks and other bladed weapons had attacked the Hindu protestors assembling there, injuring many of them [11].
Injured Hindu protestor in Shahbagh
The Rangpur Division head of Agniveer and members of other local Hindu organisations said that over 1000 heavily armed cadres of the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami attempted to attack the Hindus protesting at Rangpur on November 25, 2024. The army personnel stood in between the protestors and the armed Islamist youth, preventing any violence. Several protestors mentioned that local Muslims had also attempted to harass and bully the protestors for “assembling without prior Government permission”, leading to a heated exchange of words and one minor scuffle.
Hindu students of Dhaka University, who were protesting against the arrest of Chinmoy Prabhu were attacked by so-called “miscreants” armed with sticks.
The first hearing of the sedition case against Chinmoy Prabhu was held in Room Number 240 of the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court on November 26. A large number of Hindus (including Hindu lawyers) had assembled at the court premises. The bail petition of Chinmoy Prabhu was rejected and he was sent to prison under police custody.
Several advocates like Sumon Kumar Roy claim that the judiciary of Bangladesh is independent only on paper and every single ruling party of Bangladesh has pressurised the judiciary for their own political interests. They also claim that Chinmoy Prabhu was denied a fair hearing on November 26. An advocate sarcastically remarked, “This unelected government took no action against people who wanted to change our national flag and national anthem and who threw the national flag on roads. But they arrested Sri Chinmoy Prabhu on a baseless sedition case”.
There are two versions of what happened next. In the FIR filed against 116 Hindus, including 70 Hindu lawyers and 400-500 “unknown people”, the Bangladeshi police and the complainant Khane Alam claimed that Hindu lawyers created chaos within the courtroom by hurling abuses. Both Hindu victims and on-duty security personnel agreed that a large number of Hindus had assembled around the prison van of Chinmoy Prabhu. A few of the protestors had laid down in front of the prison van, preventing security personnel from taking away Chinmoy Prabhu for over 2 hours.
Khane Alam and Bangladeshi Police claimed that Hindus created disorder in the courtroom, terming chanting religious slogans like “Jai Shree Ram” and blowing conches as “provocative”. They claimed that a heavily armed mob had attacked the lawyers, judges and justice seekers at the court premises at around 3.30 in the afternoon. Despite claiming to have photo and video evidence, they have been unable to produce a single credible photo or video.
Dozens of videos from the court premises have gone viral on social media and every single one of them proves that the assembled Hindus were unarmed [12] [13]. They also claimed that Hindus had vandalised 20-30 vehicles and then indulged in violence in the neighbourhood of the courtroom. Videos and photos circulating on local social media indicate that such claims are false. A photograph of the relevant section of the FIR is attached in the Annexure Section.
Representatives of local Hindu organisations and several victims and eyewitnesses like Gopal Das (name changed), Sayantan Guha (name changed) and Rudrani Dhar (name changed) say that it was not necessary to assault the Hindu protestors as the people blocking the way of the prison van were already dragged away, clearing a path for the prison van an hour before. All the victims and eyewitnesses interviewed for the purpose of this report claim that on-duty security personnel had launched the initial assault on the assembled Hindus only.
Security personnel used tear gas shells and sound grenades against the Hindu protestors before indiscriminately lathi-charging and beating them [14]. Local people claim that at least 45 Hindus had suffered severe injuries and over 400 Hindu men and women suffered minor injuries. The male security personnel showed no restraint while assaulting Hindu women, resulting in at least 50 of them being injured.
A Hindu woman assaulted by male security personnel at the Court Premises
One Muslim lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was beaten to death during the commotion. Islamists were quick to pin the blame on Hindus in general and ISKCON in particular. There is video footage of his murder showing a mob of Islamists chasing a group of unarmed Hindu protestors. Saiful Islam gets caught up in the middle of the aggressors and is beaten to death [15]. His family has filed a murder case against 31 people on November 30. The Bangladesh police have filed two more cases accusing at least 1476 people of violence, vandalism and obstruction of police duty [16]. So far, 39 people have been officially arrested in connection with these cases and local leaders of the Bangladesh Sommilito Sanatan Jagaran Jot and student activists like Barun Ghosh (name changed) claim that 37 of them are Hindus.
According to many local Hindus like Supriyo Roy (name changed) and Siddhartha Nandi (name changed), a mob of Islamists began attacking the houses of Hindus in the Methorpotti region of Chattogram at around 6 p.m. with slogans of “Nara-e-Takbir”. Three houses of Hindus and the Manasa Mata Temple was burnt down that evening. No action was taken against any of the aggressors [17]. were
Islamist organisations started organising rallies throughout Bangladesh under the pretext of demanding justice for Saiful Islam. Islamist protestors were recorded urging Muslims to slaughter all ISKCON devotees in public during one such “protest rally” at Rangunia [18]. Maulana Sirajul Islam, the president of the Birganj branch of Islami Aandolon, gave a speech claiming that since Bangladesh was created on the basis of Muslim nationalism, hence the indigenous Hindu residents have to live under rules which are acceptable to Islamists. He orders anyone unhappy to live under the Islamist yoke to leave Bangladesh immediately [19].
Local Hindu organisations like Bangladesh Agniveer and the Koch-Rajbonshi-Barman Sangathan organised a large protest rally in the Panchagarh District of Rangpur Division on November 26. Local Hindus and prominent members of local Hindu organisations say that security personnel had claimed that the protest rally was illegally blocking a main road and ordered the protestors to disperse. The security personnel claim that the protestors were pelting stones and bricks at them and vandalising properties like the Shah Jalal Islami Bank. However, no such photographs or videos are in the public domain to back their claim. Relevant sections of the FIR are provided in the Annexure section.
Members of local Hindu organisations and many victims say that after some heated arguments over the blocking of roads, Islamists and security personnel assaulted the protestors while the Islamist mob pelted stones and bricks. At least 10-12 Hindus were severely injured and over 40 Hindu protestors suffered minor injuries during the assault. Protestors hurled stones and bricks in self-defence after the assault, reports claim.
Total Malaun (a religious slur used against Hindus) Death and the all-out assault on Hindus
The frequent attacks on Hindu temples have escalated since the arrest of Chinmoy Prabhu. At least 16 Hindu temples have been attacked (Five of them, ISKCON temples) since November 26. The Bangladesh Police arrested at least 5 Hindu Dharmagurus without proper explanation or evidence.

Bhairav ISKCON temple Vandalised
The attacks on Hindu temples began within hours of the murder of Saiful Islam in the Firingi Bazar and Methorpatti region of Chattogram. A mob of Islamists began attacking the houses of Hindus and places of religious significance (like temples and ashrams) in the Patharghata region of Chattogram [21]. Although the army was brought in to restore law and order, ground reports from Hindu organisations and the victim testimonies portray a different situation.
Rudrakshi Das (name changed), a local Hindu resident, said, “It has become impossible for us Hindu women to walk in the streets. Although army or BGB personnel are there at every crossing, they simply laugh when we are teased and harassed by Islamists. BGB personnel have forced me and many Hindu women to remove our sankhas and Sindurs, often doing so themselves while staring at us obscenely. A BGB personnel called me Malaun (cursed) and a terrorist. “
Malati (name changed), one of the Hindu residents of Chattogram said,“We stay in an area dominated by supporters of Jamaat. My own neighbours keep telling me that they are watching me closely. They warn me to keep quiet and not try to be a netri (leader). I have gotten threats of death and sexual assault from Islamists living in the same building. Anyone with a Hindu appearance is being interrogated by security personnel and their mobiles are being searched. People having anything related to Chinmoy Prabhu on their mobile are detained immediately. The security personnel of the BGB keep harassing us, hurling filthy abuses like Malaun, agents of India.”
Video evidence of Islamists attempting to bully a Hindu woman victim into silence in front of Government officials is there [22].
Prominent members of local Hindu organisations and all the local residents interviewed like Gopal Das (name changed), Supriyo Roy (name changed) and Chandan Ghoshal (name changed) claim that part from official arrests, the security personnel are randomly interrogating and detaining young Hindu men. They also suspect that a significant portion of the Hindu residents of Chattogram are under surveillance. They say that security personnel had detained or picked up most of the male residents of the Methorpatti region. With the unelected interim Government of Bangladesh giving a free hand to Islamists, it has become impossible for women and children to stay alone in their homes. The deserted Methorpatti area resembles an abandoned colony, a lucrative target for Islamist land grabbers.
Most of the young men who came out to resist the attack of Islamists in the Patharghata region of Chattogram on November 29 were detained by the army under one pretext or another. Student activists like Barun Ghosh (name changed) say that it has become extremely difficult for any Hindu organisation to work in the rural areas of Bangladesh. He and many other Hindu activists confirm that the old, children and women form the majority of the Hindu population of Bangladesh, leaving them vulnerable in case of an attack by Islamists.
The trend #TMD went viral on Facebook with over 2 lakh (2,00,000) posts from tens of thousands of Bangladeshi Muslims on November 30. The term TMD here is an abbreviation of “Total Malaun Death”. Malaun is a religious slur used against the indigenous Hindu population of Bangladesh, meaning “cursed people”. No action was taken by any social media platform against this hashtag. Such campaigns are designed to create fear among Hindus and encourage RULLS (Random Unceasing Low-Level Scattered Violence) against them. A Hindu in Bangladesh is bombarded with several slurs like “Daalal (agent) of India”, “Cow piss drinker” and “Cow-dung-eater” throughout his or her life.
Attacks on Hindus have increased. The murder of 50-year old Chumki Rani Das, the mother of Pranyo Das, a key co-ordinator of the Sanatan Jagaran Mancha Khagrachari, during an armed robbery on December 5 occurred following the RULLS model of targeted attacks. The robbers had ripped the Tulsi Mala from her neck. Islamists had targeted her son Pranto Das for posting his photographs with references to ISKCON to incite hostilities against him and his family [22].

Discrimination against Hindus by the executive and the Judiciary
The second hearing of Chinmoy Prabhu’s bail was scheduled for December 3. There was no lawyer to argue in favour of him during the hearing. Islamists had assaulted R. Acharya, the lawyer representing Chinmoy Prabhu and vandalised his chamber. The Bar Association has issued a “directive”, forbidding any lawyer to represent Chinmoy Prabhu. Muslim lawyers have demanded the death sentence for Chinmoy Prabhu and also pledged to prevent any lawyer from arguing his case. The next hearing date is set for January 2. This conspiracy to murder a Hindu monk with the help of the judiciary reinforces the fact that Hindus have no human rights in Bangladesh.
R. Acharya attacked and his vandalised chamber
Local Hindu organisations reveal that Islamist organisations and the Detective Department are running a campaign to identify, bully, threaten, arrest or physically harm Hindus participating in protest rallies.
Internal sources reveal that a free hand has been given to the extremists of Hizb ut-Tahrir and Ansarullah Bangla Team to stockpile huge quantities of weapons obtained from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Such weapons could easily end up in the hands of terror groups like ULFA and KNA, further destabilising the “7-sister” states of Bharat.
A large number of ordinary Hindus and members of Hindu Organisations with vested interests like Gobindo Chandra Pramanik are being forced to issue rehearsed statements, often following a template, claiming that everything is all right. However, their social media history shows that most of them were pleading for help against the relentless persecution by Islamists and the Government before [24].
None of the respected leaders of the “8-point demand” are invited to the gatherings and meetings organised by the Government. Only discredited people with vested interests like Gobindo Chandra Pramanik or organisations having no or minimal role in the movement are invited to such staged spectacles.
Forced confessions extracted from Hindus
The attacks on the MonglarGao village at Sunamganj on December 3 show the extent of Government patronage enjoyed by Islamists. A mob of Islamists attacked the Hindu localities and vandalised at least 3 Hindu temples, 5-6 gold shops belonging to Hindus and all the houses of a Hindu locality, claiming that a 20-year-old Hindu boy had committed blasphemy. Only one Bangladeshi media house reported the incident but denied any attacks on Hindu temples [25]. Videos and testimonies of terrified Hindu victims confirm not only the attacks on temples but also tell that many Hindus were forced to flee from their homes, which were then looted and vandalised with impunity.
The army has cordoned off the area, cutting off the remaining Hindus there from the rest of the world. The police have arrested Gobindo Das for capturing a video of the vandalised houses. Two Hindus named Bipro and Sobuj were held in an army vehicle as they went to observe and inspect the damage [26].
Conclusion
Islamists of Bangladesh are carrying out a pogrom against the 1.3 crore remaining Hindu population with the support of the interim government of Bangladesh. There are several instances of the Bangladesh Army and the judiciary actively aiding and participating in the persecution of Hindus. A mere political change will not solve the root cause of Islamic radicalisation and the attacks on Hindus will continue. The fabric of the society must change or safe havens like Bali must be created for the Hindu victims of Islamic terrorism. Crores of lives have been lost and hundreds of thousands of women have lost their dignity at the hands of the radical Islamists of Bangladesh since 1947. It is time for the International Community to seek permanent solutions using every possible means.
