Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has urged the Telangana government to conduct an immediate inquiry into reports claiming that 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth nearly ₹1,600 crore has gone missing from the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL). In a letter dated June 10, 2026, addressed to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the minister highlighted concerns over the alleged disappearance and called for a detailed assessment of the matter.
Referring to media reports, Reddy stated, "a news item published across various newspapers relating to the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth Rs 1600 crore, resulting in significant financial loss to the company." He expressed concern that the allegations could further affect SCCL, which is already facing financial pressure.
The minister pointed out that SCCL is dealing with unpaid dues exceeding ₹51,500 crore from the Telangana government. He wrote, "Given SCCL's current financial position due to unpaid dues exceeding Rs 51, 500 crore from the Telangana government, these allegations could further hamper the financial stability of SCCL."
SCCL is jointly owned by the Telangana government and the Centre, with a 51:49 equity shareholding pattern. Reddy noted that the reported irregularities, if left unexamined, could negatively impact the company's future growth and long-term sustainability.
In his letter, the minister said, "I therefore urge that the facts in the matter maybe ascertained and inquired into urgently to assess whether the alleged irregularities have an element of truth and also to see whether there are adequate safeguards mechanisms and internal controls for effective functioning of SCCL."
He also advised the state government to strengthen oversight systems during the assessment process. According to the minister, technology-based monitoring tools and regular reviews should be introduced to identify weaknesses at an early stage and ensure timely corrective action.
Reddy further stated that such measures would help close systemic gaps, prevent similar incidents in the future, and improve SCCL's efficiency, transparency, and credibility. He also sought the chief minister's personal intervention to ensure the smooth functioning of the company and protect the welfare of all employees and others associated with SCCL.
