The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso, emphasising its grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region. In a statement released on August 29, the Council condemned the “heinous terrorist attacks resulting in the loss of civilian lives over the months in Burkina Faso,” with particular focus on the attack in the town of Barsalogho on August 24. This brutal attack was claimed by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group.
The Security Council members conveyed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the transitional authorities and the people of Burkina Faso. They expressed their heartfelt wishes for a speedy and full recovery for those injured in the attack. The Council underscored the gravity of terrorism as a severe threat to international peace and security, stating, “Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.”
The statement also highlighted the urgent need to bring to justice all those responsible for these acts of terrorism, including perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors. The Council urged all member states to act in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions to combat terrorism effectively.
Furthermore, the Council expressed deep concern about the overall security situation in Burkina Faso and the broader transnational dimension of the terrorist threat facing the Sahel region. This concern reflects the Council's commitment to addressing the complexities of terrorism, which transcend national borders and require a coordinated international response.
The UN Security Council, comprising 15 members each with a single vote, is entrusted with the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. As stipulated by the Charter of the United Nations, all member states are required to comply with the decisions made by the Security Council, reinforcing the collective commitment to global security and stability.
