The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and emphasised the importance of holding those responsible for planning, supporting, and carrying out this terrible act accountable and bringing them to justice.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the 15-member UN Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism, in all its forms, is one of the greatest threats to global peace and security. "The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured," it said in the press statement. A press statement is an announcement made by the President of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on behalf of all 15 members. Pakistan is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.
The UNSC members offered their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the governments of India and Nepal. They also wished a quick and full recovery for those who were injured. They also emphasised the need to catch and punish those who carried out, planned, funded, or supported "this reprehensible act of terrorism" and ensure they face justice. The UNSC said those responsible for the killings must be held accountable and called on all countries to actively work with the relevant authorities actively, following international law and Security Council resolutions, to make this happen. The members underscored that terrorism is always a criminal act and cannot be justified, no matter the reason, location, or who carries it out.
They highlighted the importance of all countries taking action to fight terrorism in line with the United Nations Charter and other international laws, including human rights, refugee rights, and humanitarian law, to protect international peace and security from the dangers posed by terrorist acts. The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, on Tuesday, has caused widespread anger in India and across the world. On Wednesday, India announced several strong actions against Pakistan. These included expelling Pakistani military officers, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, and immediately closing the Attari land transit post. These steps were taken because of Pakistan's links to a terror attack across the border.
In response, Pakistan, on Thursday, decided to shut its airspace for all Indian airlines and stopped trade with India, even trade through third countries. Pakistan also rejected India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and warned that any attempt to block the water meant for Pakistan under the treaty would be considered an "act of war."
