Ukraine has run out of missiles for its US-made Patriot air defence systems, leaving the country more vulnerable to Russian ballistic missile attacks, CNN reported on Thursday, citing a source familiar with the situation.
The shortage comes amid growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Washington has faced criticism over a deal to import Russian diesel and has pressured Kyiv to stop strikes on Russian oil infrastructure.
Zelensky said he felt betrayed by Trump’s deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has since vowed to continue targeting Russian refineries.
For months, Zelensky has warned that Ukraine is running low on Patriot interceptors, among the few weapons capable of destroying ballistic missiles. The missiles remain expensive and scarce worldwide as countries replenish their stockpiles amid the war in Iran.
The source told CNN that “almost all the ballistic missiles from the last strike were not intercepted due to a lack of the (interceptor) missiles.”
Russian ballistic missiles struck three power plants in Kyiv and targeted energy infrastructure in Kharkiv overnight into Wednesday. The attack killed four people and injured 25 in Kyiv. Ukraine’s Air Force said it intercepted four Russian ballistic missiles during the assault.
Ukraine has previously faced shortages of Patriot interceptors. During a visit by CNN to a Patriot system in August, Ukrainian officials said the country had nearly exhausted its supplies. Zelensky said he was making “millions” of phone calls to allies to secure more missiles. He added that Ukraine had only a tenth of the interceptors it urgently needed.
A month later, Zelensky claimed Ukraine “will receive a license to manufacture Patriot missiles” from the United States. However, Trump declined to confirm the arrangement in September, and no licence followed.
Zelensky told the Financial Times that he could agree to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities only if Ukraine received more Patriot interceptors “at a minimum.” He added that “when he asked for more air defences the American response was to weaken Starlink’s service.”
On Wednesday, he urged Washington to provide additional supplies, saying: “The American president has all the effective and necessary tools to bring peace closer through strength, justice, and pressure on the aggressor. We ask for additional packages of Patriot missile interceptors for Ukraine.”
Earlier this week, US officials reportedly warned Ukraine and European allies that Washington could suspend European purchases of US weapons and intelligence sharing if Kyiv continued deep strikes on Russian energy facilities. Trump has denied that the US stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine reported disruptions to Starshield, the military-grade version of Elon Musk’s Starlink, which affected military operations, logistics and drone interceptions.
By Thursday, operations had partially resumed. A Ukrainian Defence Ministry source said: “As of now, Starshield’s operations have resumed and are continuing.” The ministry is investigating the restrictions.
Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 850 attack drones since midnight, “at a time when the speed of our defensive capabilities is being artificially restricted.”
Ukraine’s top diplomat in Washington, Denys Sienik, said Starshield speeds had improved but were not fully restored. A Ukrainian drone commander also told CNN that restrictions on Wednesday prevented some strike drones from reaching their targets.
