According to Anadolu Agency, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman characterized pro-Palestine rallies as "hate marches." She further remarked that the protests in response to Israel's actions in Gaza featured a significant presence of individuals intentionally engaging in activities falling just below the threshold of criminal behavior.
Following an emergency cabinet meeting led by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Braverman issued these statements. She urged law enforcement agencies, with particular emphasis on the Metropolitan Police and regional forces, to intensify their efforts in combating antisemitism, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, she said, "We've seen now tens of thousands of people take to the streets following the massacre of Jewish people the single largest loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust, chanting for the erasure of Israel from the map," Anadolu Agency reported.
She stated, "To my mind, there is only one way to describe those marches - they are hate marches." In response to a question regarding the chant "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," and when asked whether she regarded it as antisemitic, Braverman emphasized that the police operate independently. "The police must take a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism."
Suella Braverman issued a warning to police chiefs regarding the display of Palestinian flags in the UK streets. She noted that waving the flag might not be considered legitimate if it's perceived as endorsing terrorism, as reported by Anadolu Agency. Braverman also cited actions during protests that she believed could potentially disrupt public order, such as targeting Jewish neighborhoods, displaying pro-Palestinian or pro-Hamas symbols, and chanting slogans that could be interpreted as anti-Israeli.
Across London and the UK, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched, demanding an end to Israel's attacks on Hamas. These protests were prompted by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, leading to Israel's counter-offensive against Hamas.
On October 24, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that Hamas terrorists seemed more focused on their backers in Iran than on the well-being of the children they use as shields. He emphasized that Hamas posed a threat not only to Israel but also to several other countries in the region.
On X, using his official social media account, Sunak posted a personalized video message. "We will work together with the international partners to bring renewed energy and creativity to this effort."
"We must never lose sight of how essential the two-state solution is. So we'll work together with our international partners to bring renewed energy and creativity to this effort," the UK PM said. Further, he said that “Britain would work with other world powers to establish more effective governance for Palestinian territories in Gaza and the West Bank. It would also mean challenging actions that undercut legitimate aspirations for Palestinian statehood," PM Sunak added.
"Let me be clear, there is no scenario where Hamas can be allowed to control Gaza or any part of the Palestinian territories. Hamas is not only a threat to Israel but to many others across the region," the UK PM added. Moreover, he stressed that “the leaders he met agreed that this was a watershed moment. "It's time to set the region on a better path," he added.
