Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Justice Mitali Thakuria, who have been serving as additional judges in the Gauhati High Court, have now been elevated to the position of permanent judges. This decision by the Central government marks a significant step in their judicial careers, providing them with a more stable and enduring role within the judiciary. Their appointment as permanent judges reflects their dedication and contributions to the legal field, reinforcing the judiciary's commitment to maintaining a robust and effective judicial system.
On May 18, the Supreme Court collegium recommended that the two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court be made permanent. Following this recommendation, the judges of the Supreme Court familiar with the workings of the Gauhati High Court were consulted to evaluate the suitability of the candidates, as outlined in the Memorandum of Procedure.
This process ensures that the appointments are made with careful consideration and input from those with relevant knowledge and experience of the High Court's affairs, thereby maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the judicial system.
Furthermore, a two-judge committee reviewed the judgments delivered by the two High Court judges. The committee concluded that their judgments were well-reasoned, included thorough analysis of the facts, and were supported by appropriate case laws.
After examining the records and considering the opinions of the consultee judges and the committee, the Collegium determined that the candidates were fit and suitable for appointment as permanent judges. As of June 1, the Gauhati High Court is operating with 24 judges, against a sanctioned strength of 30, leaving six positions vacant.
