Two soldiers lost their lives today in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Modergam village of Kulgam district. The confrontation began after a joint operation was launched by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Indian Army, and local police based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of terrorists in the area.
The situation escalated rapidly as the forces moved into the village, establishing a cordon to trap the militants. “As the security forces came close to the hiding terrorists, they fired at the security forces triggering an encounter,” officials said. Initial gunfire resulted in injuries to one soldier, who was later transported to a hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to critical injuries.
The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the incident on social media platform X, stating, "Encounter started at Modergam Village of Kulgam District. Police and Security Forces are on job. Further details shall follow."
This encounter is part of a recent surge in terrorist activities across various districts of Jammu and Kashmir. It coincides with the annual Amarnath Yatra, during which security measures have been significantly heightened. The yatra began from the twin base camps of Pahalgam in the Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district.
Later on in the day, at least four terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, according to police sources. “Contact established at Frisal Chinnigam area in Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow," Kashmir Zone Police said in a statement.
Last month, security forces successfully neutralised three terrorists in the Gandoh area of the Doda district, reflecting the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region. Further details and developments in this case are expected as the authorities provide more updates.
